The Iranian establishment — the officials and business leaders who exert the most influence — has reportedly had enough of the radicalism of the current regime and is looking to replace it with a less confrontational, albeit still Islamic, model.
That is the analysis of an expert interviewed by the UK Telegraph, which notes that Iranian leaders are quietly taking stock of the regime’s defeats in the region and concluding that constant fights against the West are not a good idea.

I guess in a similar way to how Eastern Europe abandoned Communism. The only place it got really violent was Yugoslavia.

I’ve read that Tito kept the ethnic violence tightly clamped down on but how did he do that? I’ve never seen that discussed in more than generalities. Was he a violent tyrant himself who kept state prisons full of dissidents?
Yes Tito ruled with an iron grip.
But I will relay a message from an Uber driver who used to live in Kosovo.
He said the ethnic groups lived well with each other. Then after communism fell politicians took advantage of long dormant tensions and turned people against each other.
Reminded me of what the left does here.

Historically, Iran and before it, Persia, always spoke in a thousand different voices. Then the powers that be would choose a few as “official” and disavow the rest. And if an official voice pissed off a dangerous enemy, they would disavow it as well. It was their version of playing the field.
However, other nations quickly realized the gambit, so never took the official line at face value.
Regime change is 45 years overdue.
