BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome’s bid for re-election came to a stunning end Saturday as she was soundly defeated in a runoff election.
It marked the first time Broome had ever lost an election in her lengthy political career.
She was defeated by political newcomer Coach Sid Edwards (R), a decorated local high school football coach. With all precincts reporting, Edwards received 54 percent of the final vote.
Voter turnout was 35.7 percent.
Broome addressed supporters at the Marriott Hotel on Constitution Avenue in Baton Rouge Saturday evening.
“We stood tall and we fought hard,” she told supporters. “While the outcome tonight is not what we desired, it doesn’t diminish the progress we’ve made or the hope we’ve inspired for this city.”

🔴Edwards: 54% 🔵Broome: 46%
Edwards only raised $80k, while she had $600k
“Coach Sid Edwards (R)” won with 54%, and yet there’s no (D) behind Broome’s name. Fun headline at least.
Another Democrat blowin the wad and getting drummed out anyway
Broome---Democrat---dumped.
And he’s a white guy winning in a majority black city!
Broome swept away
Broome got broomed.
Shockingly, loser had a war chest of $600K.....he had a paltry $60K.
I wonder what the main issue was which turned the majority of voters against her.
The reporting on her loss——the first of her career-———was atrocious.
American thinker opined about why the Democrats suffered such a devastating loss in the prez election........placng great weight on the views expressed by Adam Mill in Chronicles Magazine, who argues persuasively that the Democrats’ decision-making process doomed their chances, a process unlikely to soon change.
I agree. This is a hugely newsworthy item. There’s a lot of information missing.
Maybe in the passage of time they will understand why we have become unburden by them.
Here is an article with a little more info on the race and the parties:
“Sid Edwards will be Baton Rouge’s new mayor-president after unseating Sharon Weston Broome”
“Edwards repeatedly said he plans to address the Baton Rouge Police Department’s officer shortage and add 100 to the force.
With many residents seeing public safety as Baton Rouge’s primary issue, the GOP candidate emphasized the “hopelessness” and “despair” crime brought to the city during Broome’s tenure.”

They’re gonna have to change their ways....but I doubt they will.
Thank you. They had a good ground game and knocked on 25,000 doors. And public safety was high on the list of voter concerns. Perhaps Broome’s political advisors didn’t hear those concerns.
E. Baton Rouge lost a good portion of their tax base when the new residents of St. George took their ball and went home.
