Rebels on a lightning advance through Syria said on Saturday they have begun to encircle Damascus as government forces denied they had withdrawn from areas near the capital.
"Our forces have begun the final phase of encircling the capital, Damascus," said rebel commander Hassan Abdel Ghani, with the Islamist-led alliance that launched the offensive.
The defence ministry flatly denied the army had fled positions near the city.
"There is no truth to news claiming our armed forces, present in all areas of the Damascus countryside, have withdrawn," it said.
Earlier, a war monitor and Abdel Ghani said rebels were within 20 kilometres of Damascus as government forces fall back in the face of the offensive gathering even more momentum.
The Syria Observatory for Human Rights said government forces had ceded more key ground, losing control of all of southern Daraa province and evacuating posts in Quneitra, near the Israel-annexed Golan Heights.
The monitor said government forces were also pulling out of towns as little as 10 kilometres (six miles) from Damascus.

Will Assad skedaddle before its too late?
Now I don’t think the Russians have the assets and will to save him in power there any longer. Shame, except what comes after will likely be worse.
As bad as Syria was before, now imagine multiple Islamic factions spreading their peace around the world.
In a sane western world, we would leave them along to rule and send themselves back to the Stone Age, with a warning: Touch us, and we will turn you into glass.
Blame the US for opening to door to this mess.
McCAIN!
Blame the US for opening to door to this mess.

The timing is peculiar…..is our CIA sending a message to Vlad? If so, expect tit for tat.
Assad’s government may be making their last stand in Homs and Damascus. We should know if the government will survive in the next 48-72 hours.
Both lie.
I know it is fashionable to blame the US for everything but I never have been one to slavishly follow trends.
They have been killing each other over since their pedophile came out of the desert and started killing everyone who would not worship his moon god.
Or not.
German newspapers reporting Assads family bailed to Russia.
Which is why I am taking everything with a grain of salt right now.
It will all shake out and in a couple days we will know what happened.
Looks like the Saudis and Gulf States will finally get their gas pipeline to Europe.
Either Assad's regime will fall or they'll be prepared to mount a counteroffensive in a couple of days.
Personally, I think Damascus will fall soon.
