Syrian troops withdraw from the country's south as they rush to defend Homs
ABC News ^ | Dec 7, 2024 | BASSEM MROUE

The redeployment away from the provinces of Daraa and Sweida came as Syria’s military sent large numbers of reinforcements to defend the key central city of Homs, Syria’s third largest, as insurgents approached its outskirts.

The rapid advances by insurgents is a stunning reversal of fortunes for Syria's President Bashar Assad, who appears to be largely on his own, with erstwhile allies preoccupied with other conflicts.

His chief international backer, Russia, is busy with its war in Ukraine, and Lebanon's powerful Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up his forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran, meanwhile, has seen its proxies across the region degraded by Israeli regular airstrikes.

... Turkey is a main backer of the rebels seeking to overthrow Assad.

Bashar is truly the dumb Assad. His dad Hafez contributed a division to the Coalition as window-dressing during Desert Storm. When Uncle Sam went after Saddam in 2003, Bashar could have kept jihadis from entering, the way Iraq’s other Arab neighbors did. Instead, he not only wasted money funding and training jihadis to fight in Iraq, he sent Syrian Sunni Arabs to do so. With the experience they got in Iraq, they returned to Syria and decided to make a run at him - something they tried with his father that was put down successfully in 1982.

This is blowback with a capital B. Hafez would never have done something this stupid. Maybe there’s a reason why he originally chose Bassel as heir.

Anything Turkey (under its current evil regime) is backing is no friend of America. It doesn’t look like there are any decent, moral protagonists fighting in Syria.

According to reports on X, Homs may have already been at least partially captured.

What is Turkey’s motive here? Insert Jihadists into Syria to threaten the Assad regime, Israel, Russia and the US?
If Assad falls, the whole region will once again be a major war zone, (with PALEOstinians, Sunnis, Shiites and Islamofacists all vying for power).

These scum need to be Hiroshimized.

Man always blames God for his suffering. Or a large group.

It’s usually really just a small group, the leadership, not the soldier. Pretty much everyone on the ground is not the problem, everyone behind the decisionmaking is the cause of the suffering.

Hope drones rectify this. Just keep taking out everyone with a “star”, both sides pretty much.

Assad is dead meat. Or at least he will spend the rest of his days shopping in the St Petersburg markets.

Another big win for Russia and Iran. LOL

Now the question is whether or not Israel is going to put up with this Turkish puppet on their border.

Will the new Isis inspired people turn Syria into an Islamist state? Turkey will like it as it beats bank the Kurds maybe kills them off for Turkey—They have a habit of murdering foes. The biggest loser here is not Russia but Iran/Iraq. In looking at how the thing was done—it was rather brilliant. I smell the hand of the CIA/MI6 in this. Good news—Russia now sees Turkey’s true colors. Goal—make a big boondoggle for Trump—now he must fight a terrible middle east war! So much for peace.

Yup, Assad turned Syria into a safe haven and staging ground for al Qaeda and supported Iraqi terrorists and Iranian revolutionaries of the insurgency during the Iraq war.

His support enabled the insurgency and created huge problems for both Iraq and the United States. Had it not been for Assad's support of the insurgency it would have collapsed in a matter of months.

The Jihadi he allowed into the country turned on him and have caused much death and destruction in Syria.

Would love to see Assad overthrown but the Jihadi who will replace him are much worse .

Its a front in the Sunni-Shia war. The main players in the Sunni side are the Saudis and the Gulf Arabs, and they subsidize the Turks. The Syrian rebels are their proxies. This is a massive defeat for Iran.

The Saudis et al these days are more of a force for stability. They cut off “rogue” ISIS when they became an embarassment.

Going forward, note that Trump has an excellent relationship with Saudi Arabia, and Israel has been working to have a tacit alliance with them also. Thats why Sunni Hamas switched allegiance from the Sunni powers to Iran and Hezbollah. Hamas was too rabid to go along with their previous supporters. Everyone on the Sunni side was talking peace with Israel.

I suggest everyone stop wearing out their worry beads and wait on events.

I dont see the rebel offensive as being particularly brilliant. It has been expanding into a vacuum left behind by a total collapse of the morale of their opponents. And that was not prompted by any military defeat in Syria. The rebels did not outmaneuver their enemy, they are just chasing them.

The other revolts popping up are just exploiting the withdrawal of the Syrian army from their regions. The Syrian army is now too raggedy to cover what it formerly did.

The key to everything was what Israel did to Hezbollah. That kicked off the cascade failures for Iran and Assad. Hezbollah is Irans main instrument there, and their morale collapse set the dominos falling.

Re: "What is Turkey's motive here?"

We should ask Barack Obama the same question.

Obama willfully destabilized the entire east and southern coast line of the Mediterranean Sea.

Thousands have died, and millions have been impoverished, because of Obama foreign policy in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Syria.

“ What is Turkey’s motive here.”

To turn Syria into Turkey with an Islamist line going from Syria right up to Russia.

Hezbollah was also helping Assad stay in power.

I do not know the numbers, but Hezbollah definitely had Boots On The Ground in Syria.

I had no idea Assad was in so much trouble.

I also prefer Assad to the Muslim fanatics who will now take charge in Syria.
