Torrent of Anger for Health Insurance Industry Follows C.E.O.’s Killing
New York Times ^ | Dec 5, 2024 | Dionne Searcey and Madison Malone Kircher

The fatal shooting on Wednesday of a top UnitedHealthcare executive, Brian Thompson, on a Manhattan sidewalk has unleashed a torrent of morbid glee from patients and others who say they have had negative experiences with health insurance companies at some of the hardest times of their lives.

It is unclear what motivated the incident or whether it was tied to Mr. Thompson’s work in the insurance industry. The police have yet to identify the shooter who is still on the loose.

But that did not stop social media commenters from leaping to conclusions and from showing a blatant lack of sympathy over the death of a man who was a husband and father of two children.

“Thoughts and deductibles to the family,” read one comment underneath a video of the shooting posted online by CNN. “Unfortunately my condolences are out-of-network.”

...Mr. Thompson received a $10.2 million compensation package last year, a combination of $1 million in base pay and cash and stock grants. He was shot to death as he was walking toward the annual investor day for UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare’s parent company.

...“I pay $1,300 a month for health insurance with an $8,000 deductible. ($23,000 yearly) When I finally reached that deductible, they denied my claims. He was making a million dollars a month,”

Blame the friggen government for the destruction of our healthcare. Ghouls trying to justify this guy’s murder. $10 million is not that big a pay package for a CEO at a company that large.

If they hurry, maybe they can make it to the funeral and give the corpse a kick or two!

If people want good, low-cost insurance there's only one solution - allow free market competition.

Yes, it is the gov’t that screws up industries with its insane regulations.

All this portrayal of the health insurance industry is merely to get it replaced with single payer.

FReepers that are joining in on this are morons.

(government)

I blame Manchurian Candidate Barack Hussein Obama and his idiot followers / enablers

Granted the hypothetical Manchurian Candidate doesn’t know what he’s doing but he still does the damage anyways

Barack Hussein Obama knew exactly what destruction he’d sow upon America

This tool of Satan then promoted homosexual marriage and the “transgender” lie

I can’t believe that the American public would support such a Godless man

Back-of-the envelope figuring shows about 3/4 revenue getting plowed back into actual medical care (assuming COGS is for meds, eqpt & the like?)

The entire industry is built on the delusional expectation that each person has a God-given right to force other people to pay his medical bills.

Spot on. The guy that was murdered led a company with hundreds of thousands of employees. A person with that level of talent is rare, 10 million is fugal for that.
The morons need to look in the mirror. Don’t like your coverage, change companies.

Running a 100 employee company is just as difficult as running a mega corporation. You may not have all the complexity but then again you have far less help.

“$10 million is not that big a pay package for a CEO at a company that large.“

Yeah, I as once put off by how much the guy running the fund of one of the charities I give to was taking home…until I saw the size of the fund he was responsible for.

The entire industry is also built on a foundation of bad science intended to make you sick enough to need their services and products.

When I stopped listening to my doctor’s advice I stopped needing his services. But it’s not that he is a bad guy. He is just plugged into a rotten system and he is just as much a victim as everyone else. Twenty years ago he was an awesome doctor. Now he just pushes drugs and bad diets like the system tells him to do.

If people want good, low-cost insurance there's only one solution - allow free market competition.

But then you are advocating making it mandatory to get medical insurance

Just like with auto insurance - it is mandatory

With health insurance, if you are younger, you generally don't need it, so you may not get it. But as you are older, you will need it. If it is not mandatory, then the prices will be higher.

Not according to people who run such companies. The complexity raises the difficulty factor enormously.

Over Thanksgiving I visited someone who was battling cancer. Her provider was United Healthcare. UHC delayed chemo and then denied some basic medical equipment. She passed away a couple days ago. Her boyfriend is still distraught. I am hoping to convince her care provider (boyfriend) to file a wrongful death lawsuit against United Healthcare.

I firsthand witnessed the Bullshit of how United played games with someones health.

What would you say to justify your salary when it was $10 million? I don’t buy it.
