~ The FReeper Canteen Presents ~

~ Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 ~

On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.) In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu, he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets. At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 "Val" dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor. Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack.

My dad’s ship was in Borneo on that day, since they were out there in the wilds the communication they got from the War department said “Japan started hostilities; govern yourselves accordingly.”

In the 80s I pretty much lived out of a suitcase and travelled the world on the job. There are four places in the world where I could feel a presence:

The Alamo, and knucklehead Bush wanted to change it into a theme park with kiddie rides and children running all over the place, spilling coke, candy, chips, and who knows what-all, etc. IDIOT BUSH!

The U.S.A. gravesites in Normandy, and not many people know that the local school children maintain the graves. It is next to impossible to find even one blade of grass out of place. The locals still remember and feel indebted to the good ol’ U.S. of A., unlike Paris. ;-)

The U.S.S. Arizona, complete silence. Nothing more to be said.

And later after 9-11, The World Trade Center site before it was rebuilt. Again, silence.

And, like you, I choked up at each site.

Forget? NEVER!

Well, I will say this. My father was a WW2 veteran, and I could not buy a Japanese car as long as he was alive. I would have been disowned.

The funny thing is that he served convoy duty in the Atlantic. He had nothing much against the Germans, but he hated the Japanese. Pearl Harbor made all the difference.

Most of my dad’s older brothers and my mom’s too fought in WWII.
Everyone had moved from Alberta to Oregon by then. My one uncle flew a B52 the others were in the Navy. One uncle couldn’t get in because he had issues from polio. The town gave him the job of sitting on the water tower all night looking for enemy planes because a Jap sub had fired on Astoria along the Oregon coast.

My father was on the USS Phoenix at Pearl Harbor that day. He was a young Ensign. He said they were sitting ducks as it took 30 minutes for the boilers to produce the steam needed to move and get out of the harbor. He said they were lucky in that the Japanese were concentrating on the battleships and ignoring the cruisers.

(Been to Pearl Harbor a few times. I am overcome with emotion every time.

Been there once, and I felt the same. Similar to how I felt when I visited the Gettysburg battle sight. Just overwhelming.

When I visited Pearl, there were a lot of young Japanese couples there, probably on their honeymoon. When the lights went on after the video presentation was over, the young men were grim-faced and many of the young women were in tears.
