Rochester, N.Y.— People in Rochester's 19th Ward rallied Tuesday for the Good Cause Eviction law to be passed after they claim a tenant was served an "unjust eviction."
Lakeisha Ward claims she was served an eviction notice after raising concerns about the property and taking the issues to the city.

Ward said she's not behind on rent and kept up her rent.
Torres Turn Key Property Management LLC said Ward was issued a notice to vacate because the owner has different plans for the property.
"I have emails saying this isn't personal, it's business," Ward explained. "My children and I are being told that we had 60 days to move out, and in those 60 days, we can't find anything that is either safe housing for us or reasonable housing costs for us."
"We'll give her an amazing landlord reference, because she has been a good tenant," said Daniel Torres, co-owner of Torres Turn Key Property Management. "She's kept the property up to speed. We don't have any issues with her on that side, and we don't have any issues for her calling for repairs if there's a need for one."
Ward is still in the house and wants to buy— if the owner is willing to sell it.
The property management company and Ward are set to appear in court Oct. 10 for her holdover eviction case.
So much for the owner’s property rights. A quaint, old-fashioned notion.
IF someone did this to me-———A fire might be the result.

One of the more recent articles has tenants commenting about how angry they are at the new owners of the building that want to evict them and remodel the place.
When I take applications, anyone who says “the landlord is selling MY house out from under me” gets disqualified. In fact anyone who says they are moving because the landlord is selling gets the stink eye from me. If they were such good tenants, chances are the landlord wouldn’t be selling. I realize there are RARE exceptions to this.
“I want to evict my tenants who pay rent on time, abide by the lease, get along with their neighbors, don’t cause drama and don’t tear up the place.” said NO LANDLORD EVER!
The article doesn’t mention the owners intention, but it sounds like they are using a property manager.
Maybe they want to renovate in order to command a higher rent or future sales price, which’d be hard to do w/tenants in there.
Or they could just plan on letting one of their kids live there.
Lakeisha.
Where’s Daddy?
Was it Section 8?
If the tenant found a better place at lower rent they would be out tomorrow, ignoring the 60 day notice.
And there it is. She has no intention of moving out because she’s hoping for a payout. The owner was very generous giving her 60 days but she’s pushing for more and more and more. If he really wants her out, he’ll have to pay her.
“...we can’t find anything that is either safe housing for us or reasonable housing costs for us.”
Lakeisha somehow thinks that is the Landlord’s problem.
She also reveals that she wants to buy the property.
Is it possible that she has stirred up publicity as a way of forcing the owner to give her a submarket price and easy terms? Or perhaps the “repairs” she demands are really upgrades required to get down payment money and special terms from government housing programs?
You don’t own property in NYS.
You rent it from the government.
Buy here at your peril.
“You don’t own property in NYS.
You rent it from the government.”
Where is that not the case? Don’t pay your property taxes and you’ll find out who really owns your property.
In places like Seattle, you have to give the tenant the first right of refusal when you want to sell which is INSANE. Won’t be long before that is adopted in NYS.
60 day notice means she’s been there over one year but less than 2 years. Per the ridiculous 2019 “Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act” brought to you by Leticia James and Andrew Cuomo. Most likely she is a problem tenant with baby mama drama. I have that happening across the street from one of my rentals. She and her adult daughter have cops there almost every other day. And yes they are Section 8.
They give you a little piece of paper and let you pretend to own the property.
