An atmosphere of doom and gloom surrounds COP29, but multilateral action has proven resilient before, and it must do so again, says Laurence Tubiana for the Financial Times.
In the global fight against climate change, Donald Trump’s election victory is undoubtedly a challenging setback. The next four years are critical for limiting global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius - every 10th of a degree counts.
Trump’s promise to take the United States - one of the world’s largest current and historic emitters - out of the Paris Agreement would undoubtedly be damaging and may embolden those countries and vested interests still clinging to the fossil fuel era.
Yet no amount of misinformation can hide the fact that the climate crisis is deepening. Heatwaves, hurricanes and floods are leaving a devastating trail of lives lost and economies disrupted. In 2023 alone, natural disasters caused a record US$380 billion in economic damage. The cost of inaction is huge, and close to uninsurable.

Man cannot control the climate. Use the money for dams, canals or cleaning up our forests....
Knock yourselves out, guys. Start with China and India.
Hey, love to hear it. Now we can get back to generating cheap energy (which, by the way, harms the earth much less than tearing it up for rare earths, polluting the land and sea with short-lived windmills, and countless other idiotic things you fools are pulling off.
Good, it’s all BS anyway and a naked attempt to grab power. Not a single prediction has ever come to pass.
Climate is always changing.
We never cause climate change.
We came out of The Little Ice Age in 1850.
Since 1850, temperatures have generally been rising.
That’s because — may I remind you — we just came out of an Ice Age.
Warm temperatures are good. Always.
Cold temperatures are bad. Always.
The Medieval Maximum was a warm period 1000 years ago — warmer than now. It was a good time.
The Roman Climatic Optimum was a warm period 2000 years ago — warmer than now. It was a good time.
CO2 does not raise temperature. People who understand physics know this for a fact.
CO2 is plant food. More is better.
The people who “care so much” about Climate Change are idiots.
We are well prepared. We have economic logic, a critical mass of countries, and public support on our side. Let’s stay calm and carry on.
Laurence Tubiana is chief executive of the European Climate Foundation and was France’s special representative for COP21.
Now would this be the same Asia that makes solar panels, electric cars, batteries and green infrastructure for sale in America? THAT Asia?
No, you don’t! We’re doing quite well on our own!
Many humans believe they can now control the weather, select their sex, and marry whoever they want. They think they have become God. They will find out they are wrong.
Good. Past time the US Economy stop getting mugged to make “Climate change” grifters like the author of this article rich.
Go to hell.
There have always been hurricanes.
There have always been heat waves.
There have always been floods.
The climate Nazis are lying and are full of crap.
So, what else is new?
The Orient.
Yup—with China, India and the US giving these climate fraudsters the middle finger it to going to become much ado about nothing.
Inscrutable....the Oriental mind.
They made up the climate crisis it’s just Algor’s global warming renamed
Damn right you don’t. Do it yourselves maggots.
Most of the country needs to take a geology class.
Nothing in this article sounds right to me. It is my understanding that the U.S. was one of the lowest emitters of harmful substances. Are they counting CO2 as “harmful” emissions?
