Oregon homeless advocates worry about Trump's plan to end homelessness: 'More misery'

PORTLAND, Ore. — President-elect Donald Trump has a strategy to tackle the homeless crisis at the national level. He pitched his plan during his campaign, but the question now is: will it happen? And if it does, how will it affect communities here in the Northwest?

Trump says he wants to work with states to ban urban camping wherever possible and create large "tent cities" on inexpensive land where people could access doctors and social workers.

Now that he's President-elect, his plan could be put into play in a matter of months, pushing aside housing-first policies for his treatment-first model.

That's causing a lot of anxiety among local homeless advocates.

"I think when President Trump gets around to pushing forward on this agenda item, that he's going to find a lot of sympathetic ears on the West Coast to this sort of lock 'em all up plan that he toyed with during his first administration," says Jimmy Jones.

Jones says this isn't a Trump problem. Jones says it matters less who's driving the car when it's headed down the same road, and that road is criminalizing homelessness.

But Jones knows elected officials in every city and town across Oregon and other states are under a lot of pressure to fix livability issues.

"Folks are just deeply and gravely uncomfortable by observing other people's poverty. They don't want to see it. They don't want it to be visible. They'd rather it goes somewhere else. And these solutions take time, they take patience, they take commitment, they take smart public policy choices," said Jones.

Jones says of all the items on President-elect Trump's agenda, this might be the one with the most buy-in from the right and the left.

He warns the message may sound good, but the methods will be brutal.

Hey, no problemo ... Just send all the illegals that don’t leave on their own to the blue states that object to Trump’s deportation policy and then refuse any Federal aid to support them.

There’s no real reason for homelessness unless it’s mental instability. Mental affliction sufferers should be institutionalized.

These woeful wokeist states need to solve their problems or fire their leaders as they fail to lead to a solution.

Then there’s the drug reason for those stumbling around a shipping crate home in a stupor.

Solve the drug problem and an enormous shroud has been lifted from the cities. There’s only one absolute cure for the drug menace: execute the dealers!

Overhaul the legal and courts in order to speed along the executions.

Homeless advocates rarely actually help anyone. But they make a pretty good living at it, so they need more homeless to advocate for.

Never factored in in these msm stories is the effect the homeless and homeless encampments have on the rest of us just trying to go about our normal day-to-day activities - while trying to avoid mentally ill or drug-addicted homeless blocking our sidewalks, ranting and raving in the middle of the street, screaming obscenities and racial invectives at us and our children, taking over our parks, beaches and recreational areas making them unusable and unsafe for the rest of us.

Why do they have so many rights over the rest of us?

Trump is right - corral them in specific areas, fence it off - and offer them whatever service they need.

To these homeless advocates and their allies who press for more services, I ask a question...

How many of them are you willing to let into your house so you can feed and care for them while they get back on their feet?

I don’t disparage the true homeless advocates who are trying to help those who are legitimately down on their luck and who need a helping hand.

I disparage those who think the only solution is a new or expanded government program that the “advocates” can benefit from - ex: new patronage jobs.

Really sick. The parasites that feed off the movement money spent to “end homelessness” are worried President Trump might end their corrupt useless slush funds.

Rush nailed it a decade ago. As soon as a Republican is elected the media headlines is about the homeless.

Very little mention about the homeless during Biden's disastrous term.

“There’s no real reason for homelessness unless it’s mental instability.”

Well, I believe there’s at least one more reason.

We’d more than likely be surprised at how many people choose to be homeless of their own free will.

Off the grid, panhandle money for drugs and alcohol and camp out to avoid law enforcement and rent requirements.
