Earth's biggest polluters aren't sending leaders to UN climate talks in a year of weather extremes

World leaders are converging Tuesday at the United Nations annual climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan although the big names and powerful countries are noticeably absent, unlike past climate talks which had the star power of a soccer World Cup.

But 2024's COP29 climate talks are more like the International Chess Federation world championship, lacking the recognizable names but big on nerd power and strategy. The top leaders of the 13 largest carbon dioxide-polluting countries will not appear. Their nations are responsible for more than 70% of 2023's heat-trapping gases.

“The people who are responsible for this are absent,” said Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko during his speech at the summit. “How effective are our actions at this meeting, when the President of France, which was the country which was responsible for the Paris is not even here, feels it’s not relevant? There’s nothing to be proud about.”

France isn't the only one. The world's biggest polluters and strongest economies — China and the United States — aren't sending their No. 1s. India and Indonesia's heads of state are also not in attendance, meaning the four most populous nations with more than 42% of all the world's population aren't having leaders speak.

“It’s symptomatic of the lack of political will to act. There’s no sense of urgency,” said climate scientist Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics. He said this explains “the absolute mess we’re finding ourselves in.”

Leaders highlight inevitable warming and energy transition

The world has witnessed the hottest day, months and year on record “and a master class in climate destruction,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the world leaders who did show up.

But Guterres held out hope, saying, in a veiled reference to Donald Trump's re-election in the United States, that the “clean energy revolution is here. No group, no business, no government can stop it.”

“...42% of all the world’s population...”

Clearly see this as the money laundering/wealth redistribution SCAM that it is?

The weather was too bad to make the Climate Change meeting. Cancel all future meetings.

Might as well be The Royal Society Of Putting Things On Top Of Other Things....

Mr Cutler Er, Cutler, Staffordshire. Um ... well, Mr Chairman, it’s just that most of the members in Staffordshire feel... the whole thing’s a bit silly.

*Cries of outrage. Chairman leaps to feet.*

Sir William Silly! SILLY!! (he pauses and thinks) Silly! I suppose it is, a bit. What have we been doing wasting our lives with all this nonsense? (hear, hear) Right, okay, meeting adjourned for ever.

Who would want to go to Azerbaijan? Maybe if they held the conference in a resort with warm weather attendance would be better

There’s no urgency on the part of people to act?

I suggest they schedule a lecture by Greta Thunberg. Such a lecture is bound to shock the conscience of the world into action.

The climate change activists are frantically searching for the site where the Neanderthals stored their thermometers.

Wishful thinking by gutierrez. The only ones showing up this year are the small-time grifters seeking money from the big boys. The rest of the world has realized that they have just about milked this cow dry, and soon there will be some new threat to humanity offered up for the media to foist on the public.

The one energy source that would help the most is nuclear which they oppose as well. There was a recent article about and issue in Europe with lack of wind and extended cloud cover. Energy production dropped greatly.

“....lack of political will to act.”

What, exactly, ought to be DONE? They’ve actually already told us as much: wipe out much of the human population now existing, and force the remaining peasants to live in a dystopian Stone Age. This, of course, while our self-appointed betters rightfully enjoy lives of luxury and privilege.

Every year is year of weather ‘extremes’... And has been since the creation of this earth. We do not control the weather... The sooner these money grabbing climate change shyster politicians figure that out... The better off we’ll all be. The earth was here before us, and it will be here after us... Our time is merely a blip in the history of this planet, and imagining that we have some sort of control over natural occurrences to this planet is complete nonsense.

Raising taxes and penalizing the poor and middle class people of this planet will achieve nothing, other than enriching the politicians and climate change preachers who dreamt up this Global Warming boondoggle.

Pollution on this planet is a real problem, and we should do all we can to mitigate it and eliminate it... That being said... We still need to heat our homes, supply our industries and offer people a chance to achieve their dreams. Taxing the hell out of us and putting up a couple of windmills here and there will not achieve anything.

The world's biggest polluters and strongest economies — China and the United States — aren't sending their No. 1s.

So send them a big No. 2 instead.
