A Virginia principal went to vote. She was asked whether she was a citizen.

As a public school educator who was once declared principal of the year, Liza Burrell-Aldana talks to young people about their responsibility to this country.

So it shook her Thursday evening, she said, when a poll worker at an early voting site in Fairfax County, Virginia looked at her driver’s license and asked her, twice: “Are you a citizen?”

She said she was. The worker then asked whether Burrell-Aldana had proof of citizenship in her purse, she recalled.

“Who asks that question? I was like, ‘Why would I carry that with me?’” Burrell-Aldana said.

Burrell-Aldana, who immigrated from Colombia in 2002 and became a U.S. citizen in 2011, hadn’t been asked such questions when she voted in three previous presidential elections, and said the political climate seems to have given license for people to ask.

The incident played out after Donald Trump and many Republicans have falsely claimed that waves of noncitizens are voting, stoking fears. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) has embraced the issue, pushing for a daily scrub of voter rolls. Voting rights activists throughout the country, meanwhile, are worried that this rhetoric will lead to eligible voters being harassed or afraid to cast their ballots......

Burrell-Aldana, in considering why her citizenship was questioned this year and not in past years, noted an environment where demeaning jokes about Latinos and others seem to be thrown around easily — as they were at a recent Trump rally at Madison Square Garden.

“I do look like a Latina and I sound like a Latina,” Burrell-Aldana said. “I think that was the reason why.”

So she looked and sounded like a Latina plus is a naturalized citizen, and is offended for being asked if she's a citizen. In her defense if the voting place doesn't require proof of citizenship than she shouldn't have to carry it.

She moved here from Columbia and has the accent. Became a citizen in 2011. What does she expect? Does she not want the vote safeguarded from foreigners?

Eff her. Bush, Obama and Biden flooded our nation with WAY too many immigrants.

Does VA give drivers licenses to noncitizens that are indistinguishable from citizens’?

I’d be curious about the law. I could see proof of citizenship when you register, but not at the polling place.

My State, right next to VA, has had ‘Real ID’ for years now. We had to go to the MVA and submit all of our documents.

Isn’t that supposed to ensure who someone is, and whether they are a citizen or not?

It seems to me that Virginia would demand ID and ensure voter registration.

This story sounds fishy.

“...after Donald Trump and many Republicans have falsely claimed that waves of noncitizens are voting”

“Falsely” — naturally. Show us the PROOF!

“stoking fears” — fears about what? If you are legal and following the law what would you fear? More crap without any PROOF.

This is just reflexive Dem fear mongering and yellow journalism.

… hadn’t been asked such questions when she voted in three previous presidential elections …

I’m glad we’re starting to fix that problem.

It appears Virginia does not require proof of citizenship to get a drivers license so apparently they have to ask. Where I live in South Carolina you must Provide proof of citizenship as one of the documents when getting a drivers license for the first time. So when I go to vote, I have to show my drivers license and answer a few questions, but they don’t ask me about citizenship because I’m showing them the drivers license that I must be a citizen.

I imagine in some states they might have different markings on the drivers license depending on what kind of documents you need to have one, I would hope that states that allow noncitizens a drivers license there would be a way to show that possibly you have a green card or you’re here on a work permit or something.

Either way, no one should be offended by that question.

What citizen would complain about being asked that question?
Then she called the media to tell them she was insulted?

I wish poll workers would ask everyone that question in every state!

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Good for the poll worker for doing her job. The voter should have been pleased if she truly holds America in her heart.

Well Karen, maybe it was because your not a "Naturalized U.S. citizen, and you may have a slight accent....maybe.

I HATE them for those lousy conclusions of the pinheaded excuses for “journalists” who have allowed to give their personal biased opinions as pseudo facts all these years.
