When the Republican National Committee requested absentee drop box surveillance footage from the City of Detroit, the city asked for an extension — then said the footage had been deleted, according to a new lawsuit from the RNC. The party is now suing the city.
“Deleting drop box surveillance footage while there is a pending FOIA request for it is an assault on transparency,” RNC Chair Michael Whatley said in a press release. “This breach of trust is exactly what reduces confidence in our elections.”
The RNC sued the Detroit Department of Elections on Oct. 15, claiming it had violated the Michigan Freedom of Information Act by allowing the requested drop box video to be deleted. The RNC is requesting an injunction to make the city retain election drop box surveillance.
“With the election underway, there is a real and imminent [danger] of irreparable injury that more video surveillance records of drop boxes will be destroyed after a timely FOIA request is received,” the suit reads.
The party was requesting surveillance of a drop box at Wayne County Community College following the state’s Aug. 6 primary. The city asked for a 10-business-day extension to the Aug. 20 request, then replied that the footage had been automatically deleted after 30 days. The RNC claims its request was received 16 days before the video was set to be deleted.
The lawsuit cited a 2019 Detroit executive order that said record “retention is required, even if otherwise authorized by a schedule, if a FOIA request has been received …”
“Justice requires that the Department of Elections abide by the FOIA and maintain public records …” the suit reads. The RNC is asking the court to find Detroit “arbitrarily and capriciously violated the FOIA by destroying the video surveillance records” and order the city to pay attorneys’ fees and fines.
“We will hold Detroit accountable, as this secrecy has no place in a fair and secure election — Michiganders deserve far better,” Whatley said in the release.

Big steal going on in Detroit. And other places.
I’d like to see the senate decline to accept their electors for stuff like this.
Prosecution and jail is the onyl way this crap is going to end.
Who is going to prosecute? A Democrat AG? Good luck with that.
Many polling places in Detroit had thousands of more ballots than registered voters in 2020.
Yet, the GOP did nothing.

Yes, we are going to witness election cheating on a scale never seen before in our wildest dreams. And once again the courts, law enforcement, and the Never Trumper wing of the Republican Party will completely ignore it. Our only hope is that the margin of victory will be so large that it cannot be overcome.
Mafias never sleep
Agreed.
The only thing I can think of, is somehow making it a federal offense of some sort.
There is practically NOTING in digital world which can be deleted!
There is free software you can use to find deleted stuff on the disk. Experts can recover even destroyed disks, there are always some backups somewhere, ...!
Only thing easily deleted are Democratic documents requested by subpoenas!
Hillary computer, DOJ documents against Trump, Detroit election tape ...
Nothing you can do about them deleting footage except sue them and hope you get some kind of huge punative award.
They delete it because they know they can rig the election and nothing can de done about that. No court is going to disqualify votes for fear of disenfranchisement.
There should be zero dependency on Rats concerning voting integrity — zero!
Democrats aren’t even trying to hide it anymore.
Yet, the GOP did nothing.
And, once again, they're doing nothing. Detroit has blocked the windows that allowed people to watch the vote-counting process. Tell me they're not cheating.
RNC should have their own surveillance cameras.
Tina Peters caught Dominion doing the same thing - deleting records legally required to be retained, thus making an audit impossible. They did it not only in CO but everywhere, through a supposed “update”. And a judge in GA ruled that after the system is certified it can be altered however the company wants and still be considered “certified”.
IOW, the judge ruled that as long as a company gets certification they can legally run a system designed to flip votes and then destroy any evidence - even records legally required to be retained.
That judge should be in Gitmo along with all the Dominion folks and the people who put Tina Peters in jail. And the key to their cells should be given to Tina Peters.
Maybe one day we’ll remember that we can do something about it...we choose not to.
I read WAY too much on here what sounds like we are poor victims who should lock our doors, hope “justice” fixes election stealing and everything else dems do, and if not, wait four more years.
We don’t have four more years.
