U.S. strikes Houthi weapons storage facilities in Yemen [B-2's]

The strikes targeted facilities in parts of Yemen controlled by the Iran-backed group.

U.S. B-2 bombers and other aircraft struck five underground Houthi weapons storage locations in parts of Yemen that the Iranian-backed rebel group controls, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Wednesday.

The facilities, which officials said were hardened, housed "various weapons components of types that the Houthis have used to target civilian and military vessels throughout the region," Austin said.

Houthi rebels have attacked civilian vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The group was suspected in an attack in August.

The strikes were the first time the U.S. has used B-2 bombers, also known as stealth bombers, in strikes against the Houthis in Yemen, a U.S. official told NBC News.

"This was a unique demonstration of the United States’ ability to target facilities that our adversaries seek to keep out of reach, no matter how deeply buried underground, hardened, or fortified," Austin said in a statement.

The Houthis, an Iran-backed militia that has taken over part of Yemen, started launching missiles and drones and pursuing other attacks against shipping vessels in response to the war in Gaza. The Houthis have announced their support of the terrorist group Hamas.

An annual $1 trillion flow of goods goes through the Red Sea. Some shippers responded to the attacks late last year by suspending service in the Red Sea.

The United States on October 16, 2024 conducted multiple B-2 bomber strikes on weapon storage facilities in areas of Yemen controlled by the Iran-backed Huthi rebels, according to the US military and defense department.

The U.S. first launched airstrikes against Houthi weapons in January in response to the Houthi attacks against commercial shipping.

Austin said he authorized Wednesday's strikes at the direction of President Joe Biden.

Austin said the strikes are intended "to further degrade the Houthis’ capability to continue their destabilizing behavior and to protect and defend U.S. forces and personnel in one of the world’s most critical waterways."

The Houthis seized Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, in 2014. The protracted conflict has caused extreme hardship. The United Nations has called Yemen's humanitarian crisis the largest in the world and says more than 18 million people depend on humanitarian assistance.

Savagely kill Israeli citizens, no worries, the Biden admin will restrain the IDF.

Threaten the economy in the run up to an election? Send the bombers!

B2’s seem like overkill for this mission. Trying to score political points?

That may be CNN’s response. I’m just saying its not like Yemen has a tough IADS to penetrate requiring low RCS aircarft. Unless these bunker busters were too big for an F-18, simple tactical aircraft could have managed.

Should have ben done at the start, plus Yemen's ports should have been obliterated and its harbors mined.

Any Dem administration oozes weakness like feces from a leaky toilet: our enemies can smell it anywhere. That's why the world is on fire.

Looked it up.

30,000 pounds. Not going on a fighter.

Full-size bomber has greater range.

This looks like a war with US versus Yemen and I don’t think we should be doing little tiny things like dropping enormous bombs on suspected weapons caches without a declaration of war. You can’t just blow up stuff and walk away. You have to make them surrender.

It's about time we got semi serious

The US has blown approximately 350 SM-3 block IIa interceptors, 5oo cruise missiles and over a thousand AIM -120 air to air missiles shooting down cheap, crappy and crude missiles and drones when we could have destroyed them in their bunkers at the start of this fiasco and prevented all the chaos and disruption in the region

The Biden administration has squandered a several hundred billion (perhaps as high as half a trillion when all is totaled) dollar investment in anti missile and anti air defense systems defending our carrier task forces and Red Sea shipping from Iranian backed Houthi terrorists trying to shut down the Red Sea shipping routes and attacking Israel when we could have easily destroyed these missiles and drones on the ground in their bunkers and launch sites.

But the Democrat politicians in congress and the Biden administration would rather protect their Houthi Iranian Hezbollah and Hamas allies and allow them to attack America's carrier task force like sitting ducks with impunity, dearly commercial shipping in the Red Sea

“The essential act of war is destruction, not necessarily of human lives, but of the products of human labour. War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent.”
― George Orwell, 1984

“Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia.”
― George Orwell, 1984

“...the object of waging a war is always to be in a better position in which to wage another war.”
― George Orwell, 1984

“The war, therefore if we judge it by the standards of previous wars, is merely an imposture. It is like the battles between certain ruminant animals whose horns are incapable of hurting one another. But though it is unreal it is not meaningless. It eats up the surplus of consumable goods, and it helps to preserve the special mental atmosphere that the hierarchical society needs. War, it will be seen, is now a purely internal affair. In the past, the ruling groups of all countries, although they might recognize their common interest and therefore limit the destructiveness of war, did fight against one another, and the victor always plundered the vanquished. In our own day they are not fighting against one another at all. The war is waged by each ruling group against its own subjects, and the object of the war is not to make or prevent conquests of territory, but to keep the structure of society intact. The very word “war,” therefore, has become misleading. It would probably be accurate to say that by becoming continuous war has ceased to exist. The peculiar pressure that is exerted on human beings between the Neolithic Age and the early twentieth century has disappeared and has been replaced by something quite different. The effect would be much the same if the three superstates, instead of fighting one another, should agree to live in perpetual peace, each inviolate within its own boundaries. For in that case each would still be a self-contained universe, freed forever from the sobering influence of external danger. A peace that was truly permanent would be the same as a permanent war. This—although the vast majority of Party members understand it only in a shallower sense—is the inner meaning of the Party slogan: WAR IS PEACE.”
― George Orwell, 1984

You would think those closest to the founders generation would agree with you, but they didn’t.

Like the Houthi’s actions in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea today, the Barbary States were a menace to American merchant ships, and international shipping in the Mediterranean. in the early 1800s, and President Thomas Jefferson did not ask for a delcaraion of war, he just sent the Navy to go after them.

Tripoli, in the phrase “From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli” is a direct reference to our undeclared war against the Barbary States.
