My understanding is they were either in Donetsk (behind the lines in SE Ukraine between the Crimean peninsula and Russian boarder or in Russia proper on the border.
There were 10 NKs killed, 7 officers and 3 enlisted, plus several Russians. Given that mix the most likely thoughts are that they were there to train the Russians on NK equipment that the Norks were in the process of supplying to the Russians.

I read both sides of this war and the Russian side says Poles and Georgians as in the nation of Georgia are fighting for Ukraine.

Those poor, freedom-loving North Korean soldiers, come all the way from eastern Asia to defend liberty in Europe, and fight along-side Putin's troops against those nasty Ukrainians, who stubbornly refuse to surrender their homeland!
Kim Jong Un has come to the aid of his friend Putin, but must endure the tragedy of seeing his military forces depleted!
When are the Western powers going to finally wake up and realize that Putin and Kim are fighting for Democracy?
As long as NATO continues supporting Ukraine, which is fighting for its existence, only more freedom-loving North Korean soldiers will be fed into the meat-grinder.
