HOUSTON — The union for 45,000 United States dockworkers agreed to suspend their strike until Jan. 15 to provide time to negotiate a new contract, according to an Associated Press source.
U.S. ports from Maine to Texas shut down Tuesday when the union representing about 45,000 dockworkers went on strike for the first time since 1977. The strike began at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday and halted operations at ports from Brownsville to Boston.
The International Longshoremen’s Association wants significantly higher wages and a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates and container-moving trucks used in the loading or unloading of freight at 36 U.S. ports.
Those ports handle roughly half of the nations’ cargo from ships.
The contract between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance, which represents the ports, expired Tuesday. Some progress was reported in talks late Monday, but the union went on strike anyway.

They know this is/will backfire on Harris in November.
Then they can say it’s Trump’s fault.
The January surprise.
The good news is this means they know Trump is going to win and they can’t stop him.
AUTOMATE the darn ports. Done.
Yeah. The DNC must have leaned on them hard.
Panic buyers are now panic hoarders.
So toilet paper may still be out of stock for the next couple of weeks because of dipshit panic buyers?
Yep. dipshits don't know that 95% of TP, paper towels, and napkins are made in America.
Geez....And I’ve already collected to bags of leaves...
Oh, yeah. An economy-crippling strike leading right up to the elections would have been a garlic sandwich to the Democrat vampires. Can't allow that.
Wonder how much this cost us.....You know that Union Chief didn’t back off for nothing.
They know it’s backfiring on the unions. Citizens are suffering and the want a huge increase and “no” automation. Some automation can save lives. Computers can run forklifts.
And it looks petty giving the suffering during a hurricane and the crap economy.
The wrath of the people would go crazy if things costs even more or scarce because of the strike.
I’m a professional shopper and have been for 9 years. I saw a woman in her 70s today while I was working a job and she had six toilet paper 12 packs in her cart. I stopped, looked her straight in the eye, tapped one of her packages and said “you do know this is made in the states, right?” She was like “.i did not know that” 🤦🏻♀️
How in TF do you make it to her age and know absolutely zero about your own country? I worked through covid and was generally decent in Gpop (not always). I’m done with this crap.....no more, never again and I’m gonna call these dipwads out loudly.
This isn't a soda - fill and cap assembly line.
“They know this is/will backfire on Harris in November.”
Exactly. The Harris/Walz internal polling must not be in the Democrats favor with this strike.
This is BAD.
I want the American voters to suffer.
Otherwise, since Herbert Hoover the winner nearly always presides over a favorable economy or the victorious challenger vows to improve on the bad one. Gerald Ford (whip inflation now), GHW Bush....
They can say “the stock market is booming” “gas is 50 cents less than last year” and “inflation is easing.”
This is terrible.
UPS, UAW and now this one settled.
Satan is helping the Dems.
Yep.
Extended … for KommieLa.
Suspended … not extended.
🙃
Yes, unfortunately.
