1,000 people reported unaccounted for in North Carolina county hit hardest by Hurricane Helen

More than 1,000 people have been reported unaccounted for in a devastated North Carolina county where 10 people have already been confirmed dead after Hurricane Helene, officials said Sunday.

Authorities in Buncombe County reported the horrifying toll in an emergency meeting announcing emergency medical shelters and ongoing rescue efforts in areas almost overwhelmed by stormwater.

They also announced a special website to appeal for help finding those unaccounted for — with “more than 1,000 reports so far,” one local official told the live-streamed meeting.

“We’re doing the best we can,” Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller said of conditions making it almost impossible to reach the stranded due to collapsed roads, failing infrastructure and widespread flooding.

Many of the unaccounted for are hoped to just be those without electricity and efforts to let loved ones know they are safe, officials said.

However, the county, home to Asheville, already has 10 of the Tar Heel State’s 11 confirmed deaths — a terrible toll expected to soon rise, Gov. Roy Cooper conceded.

Hopefully, the majority of the missing are just having communication issues and can't contact their loved ones.

However, I'm already seeing reports of bodies being found in trees and submerged vehicles.

My niece and her daughter are okay but miserable. "No water, no lights, no AC, no service, but otherwise okay".

A friend is making his way to them to take them back to his house.

Meanwhile, Biden is at the beach at Harris is in California at a fundraiser.

This is what the Democrat candidate for NC attorney general posted:

Rep. Jeff Jackson

I’m hearing the main issue for Asheville right now is water. Their main treatment plant is out and it could be several days until it’s back online. No one is panicked, but it’s a clear and urgent priority. Lots of folks focused on this right now, but it’s still a problem.

“Hearing”? Has he not done any personal investigation as to what is happening in his state? “No one is panicked?” Hundreds of thousands of people are panicked!

“The main issue for Asheville right now is water”??? Yeah, most of the town is under water! Forget the water treatment plant for the time being. It may be under water as well.

Talk about missing the issue. This guy is clueless.

Right now there are people missing, roads washed away, and homes under water, and he “hears” that the main problem is the water treatment plant is “out”.

How disconnected from the voters and their urgent issues can one person possibly be?

It took me well over 36 hours to find out where and how my friend Perri is due to the cell towers down, general chaos and confusion.

She lived mere yards from the river and lost everything.

She has nothing now but her two dogs.

I have no idea how to help her.

Catastrophic flooding in this area was predicted ahead of time.

The problem is Americans have received all kinds of false "catastrophe warnings" from covid to "climate change". When a real catastrophe comes along, the warnings fall on deaf ears.

A friend of my daughter was at an arts and crafts center in western NC and was supposed to stay for several more days when they released them early Thursday ahead of the hurricane. She took off as soon as she was packed but many decided to wait until Friday morning to leave. They are stuck there now.

The Biltmore House could shelter many of these frightened, homeless people. Have they opened its doors yet?

This is an example of how you should have a communications plan for a SHTF situation. If these people had small ham radios, a bit of wire, and a battery they could be communicating with the world.

Setting up web site is useless if you dont have a computer connected to the internet.

With a technician license (amateur radio) one could send emails via handy talkie and a lap top, tablet or phone without using internet on the affected end. Of course the receiving end will need wifi to connect to their mail app.

“When a real catastrophe comes along, the warnings fall on deaf ears.”

t isn’t possible to prepare for something so unpredictable and catastrophic. Was the entire SE USA supposed to have re-located before the storm?

I’m pretty sure that — if all the technical requirements are in place — that would work even sans the technician license.

Finally got power back on.

Hopefully, most of them are having issues due to power outage and the fact that the cell phone network is down.

Exactly. And delivering “text” messages is pretty easy.

I belong to a CERT group that was formed after an early year ice storm that ravaged Western New England about ten years ago. We can set up and relay messages from the NY Border to Boston. Letting someone know you are alive and well (or hurt and need help) saves lives and reduces panic.

And that is the service for amateurs to do regarding Emergency Communications that ARRL keeps pushing. That is an important community service and does more than what they can do getting in the way of First Responders.\

Cell serivce will be up with tower trailers, etc. and it is for those very First Responders—not for normal folks—not at first.

But sending out emails or texts to loved ones via radio is a very important sevice during times of disaster.
