Employers are Firing Gen Z Graduates and Don’t Plan on Hiring More

Companies are hiring and firing Gen Z graduates faster than ever, creating a very miserable work experience for everyone involved. The rapid firing of Gen Z in multiple companies is not surprising as employers have spent the last few years complaining about how this particular group of employees is hard to work with, but the scale at which this is occurring does not set a good precedent for the future of work.

The Gen Z mass firing was revealed in a recent survey that showed that six in ten employers have already fired college graduates who were hired this year. One in seven of these employers also claim that they will refrain from hiring similar recent college graduates next year as well.

According to a survey by Intelligent, 75% of companies reported that some or all of the recent college graduates they had hired this year were unsatisfactory. Companies are quickly firing these Gen Z workers because they feel these employees are “unprepared for the workforce, can’t handle the workload, and are unprofessional.” These complaints have been levied against the group for the last few years but so far, managers have been able to work around the problem rather than eliminating the workers.

The primary reason for the rapid firing of Gen Z in companies is said to be lack of motivation among the employees—50% of respondents cited this as the main reason. The other factors include lack of professionalism, poor organizational skills, poor communication skills, challenges with accepting feedback, lack of relevant work experience, and poor problem-solving skills. The dearth of technical skills, poor cultural fit, and difficulty with working in a team were a few of the less cited reasons on the list.

Pay more. The only way to get better applicants. In fact in all cases quality costs more.

I was at a fast food restaurant and the cashier was a young lady that could not do a simple calculation regarding my change and had to call her supervisor. My total was $19.50 and I was giving her a $20 dollar bill. I told her I would give her an additional 50 cents so she could give a dollar bill as change and she did not understand what I was doing and that’s when she called her supervisor. Very sad.

My department had one that one of the first things he said was a comment about how unfair income inequality was. He also complained that it was unfair that he had to work 40 hours to get paid for 40 hours. He didn’t last long.

Millennials (my tribe) are bad enough but the younger batch is truly scary to encounter. Just yesterday I drove by a girl, young teen, standing in the street a good 10 feet from sidewalk, poking her phone, oblivious to her whereabouts. Before I got home I passed by a group of three, and then a group of five or six young people, walking in the street like zombies, as if it were a cow path.
And I’m in central PA. Trump country. Dozens of Trump signs for every one of Harris.
The parents and grandparents obviously have some common sense. But their young...are imbeciles. Public ed products, smart as government cheese.

OK, now imagine your observation transported to the inner city where I encounter these same morons. Only, they are broke and angry and violent. And, their thoughtless behavior extends to actions for which they can be incarcerated for decades.

There’s no motivation and people want to remain children because there is no clear path to success as an adult now.

When I started out even the most basic jobs like a porter, driver and waitress could afford their own home, car and kids. If you got an education and had some business savvy, sky was the limit.

Today only a few professions can afford even the most basic home and vehicle. Having 2 kids is just a fantasy. And the number that can afford it is decreasing as prices continue to go up with stangnant (or even decreasing) salaries.

Something clearly needs to be fixed and few politicians are even mentioning this

We need to teach Gen Zers the game. The game:

Fake it, make an effort, and use your present employer for a pay check while you scramble to find a better paying job. Then repeat. Then repeat. It is called job hopping and the only way to get a decent salary in inflationary times. Inflation circles the globe while salary adjustments and raises for existing employees are still putting on their pants.

Same here. Everyone had a job. All the cars in the parking lots were usually bought by the teenager.

I had a management job where a large percentage of the staff (all white collar workers) really did absolutely nothing. I (seriously) suggested that upper management fire 50% of the staff and double the salary of everyone who remained. Salary budget basically stays the same. Now you have a well-paid hard-working staff. Making literally double what they could ever make anywhere else. If someone goofs off? Fire them. Easy to replace with the new double-salary approach.

No one took me at all seriously. We kept salaries low and suffered with a staff heavily weighted toward non-performers.

This is key.

Decades ago, hard work could really get you somewhere. This is MUCH less true now. People with full time jobs cannot afford rent, or marriage. They feel doomed. They don't want to work hard because they feel that it's pointless.

I don't see a fix (except companies paying higher salaries for good workers). This is a big problem and I think a lot of observers feel that it is incumbent on the young workers to "fix" the problem. But I don't think they can do the fixing.

In 1972 dollars, a senior engineer would be making $274,000 today. So, you’re right. They pay half and get half.

That is part of the problem. But something deeper is going on. Many decades ago when I was a kid, in the winter we’d go up and down roads with snow shovels. With luck, someone would pay us a few bucks to shovel out their driveway.

I haven’t seen kids here do that in at least 20 years.

Side note:

I live in a town that is perhaps 85% white. The next town down is perhaps 60% white. Nobody is rich in either town. There’s a McDonald’s at the border.

I go into that McDonald’s on occasion. You can see black kids in the kitchen hustling, making food. Not a single white kid. I find that curious. Do they hire only black kids? Or maybe no white kid wants to work at McDonald’s anymore.
