Running an electric car is twice as expensive as a petrol one

Electric cars are up to twice as expensive as petrol or diesel vehicles to run...

Running an electric vehicle (EV) can cost more than 24p per mile, while a diesel vehicle is 12.5p .. 80p per kilowatt hour ...

A typical electric car will travel 3.3 miles for every kWh of electricity used, meaning rapid and ultra-rapid chargers currently cost the equivalent of 24.1p per mile.

...

This is about double the average diesel car, which will do 43 miles per gallon, resulting in a cost of 12.5p per mile at current prices. A typical petrol car costs 14.5p per mile,...

A return journey from London to Penzance would cost £148 in an electric car using rapid chargers .. compared with £77 in a diesel car and £89 using petrol.

...

prices at rapid chargers have increased by 5 per cent over the past year, despite a 30 per cent decrease in the wholesale cost of electricity.

This has coincided with a fall in the price of oil.

Even drivers who choose slower public chargers – the threshold is 50 Wh of power, allowing a full recharge in around 30 minutes – are paying more per mile than petrol and diesel drivers.

...

recent figures show sales of electric cars have significantly slowed.

They account for 17.2 per cent of all new registrations since the beginning of 2024. This marks a decrease from the 18.7 per cent high in the latter half of 2022.

..

rapid and ultra-rapid chargers currently cost electric car drivers the equivalent of 24.1p per mile, while slower chargers cost the equivalent of 16.4p per mile.

...

Sales of electric cars in Europe are performing even worse than in the UK, with figures showing registrations were down by 44 per cent in August.

If you have to buy a new battery, its a fortune to replace it.

And how far can they go on a charge? My car can go close to 400 miles on a tank of gas.

Given that Lithium is mined primarily for EV’s and EV’s are really primarily fueled by coal, the carbon footprint of manufacture and use will never be offset. There is also loss in each conversion from coal -> electricity -> charging -> discharging.

How fast is your car? A Tesla can do 0-60 in less than 2 seconds and 200 mph.

I drive a 2012 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab.
It is my third Tacoma(88, 99).
This is the best vehicle I have ever owned.
It currently has 113K miles.
Up until now the only part I have ever replaced on it was a module under the airbag that controls the horn, airbag and other controls on the steering wheel.

I replaced the front brakes at 92K miles.

Five years ago I had an issue with two emissions pumps/gizmos. However, Toyota had a recall on them up to 70K.
So, they replaced them for free.

These two same emissions gizmos failed again. This time I am on the hook. The parts from Toyota are $1600. One can be bought after market OEM. The other you can only get from Toyota. So, this repair is going to coast about $1700 total.

EVs do not have emission pumps, exhaust systems, mufflers or catalytic converters that people want to steal for their scrap value.

” EV’s are really primarily fueled by coal,”

Renewables provide more electricity than coal in the US.

“There is also loss in each conversion from coal -> electricity -> charging -> discharging.”

So? What other use would you put coal to?

Oil no longer spurts from the ground. Refining, transportation also.

OTOH, the least loss in conversion is using an EV powered by electricity from a combined-cycle NG plant.

Batteries heavy.

More expensive tires that wear out faster.
More wear on roads and infrastructure.
Higher insurance premiums to cover repairs and liability.

No thanks.

Expensive to run, depreciate quickly, cannot be economically repaired, no resale value, limited range, poor performance in cold weather and may burst into flames.

And Teslas have the added benefit of pissing off every driver ahead of you as you blind them with your 10K-lumen headlights.

The only reason it did is because Musk is supporting Trump, they hope it hurts his car sales

There is a place for EV’s but as a replacement for everybody’s car is not it.

I would be the perfect person for an EV (as a second car). I live only 5 miles from where I work. I could easily drive it to work and back and do any running around without worrying about a recharge till I got home.

But, no way would I have it as my only car. Any long distance trips or out of my regular area, I would not want to rely on electric.

True that. But on the other hand, EV's have things that gas cars don't have. Like charge controllers (that monitors the main battery's charging, including converting AC to DC) and the ICCU (which charges the normal 12V battery from the main battery). It remains to be seen if those will be dependable parts (ignoring the first few EV models).

Are you short Tesla stock? I notice you did not call for disclosure of those posting anti-EV propaganda ...

My grandson got sucked in. His insurance was $450.00 per month. He was driving late at night and totaled his Tesla and he, in hindsight, is grateful to have gotten outta that deal, no deal!
