JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has called for federal employees in Washington, DC, to return to their offices, highlighting the ongoing debate over remote work policies.
What Happened: Speaking at The Atlantic Festival, Dimon expressed his frustration with the number of empty buildings in the capital, according to Business Insider on Friday.
“By the way, I’d also make Washington, DC, go back to work. I can’t believe, when I come down here, the empty buildings. The people who work for you not going to the office,” he stated,
“That bothers me,” he added. Dimon emphasized that he does not allow such flexibility at JPMorgan.
Why It Matters: Dimon is not alone in his stance. Earlier this week, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that Amazon employees would return to the office five days a week, reverting to pre-pandemic norms.
JPMorgan’s policy mandates managing directors to be in the office full-time, while other employees must work in person at least three days a week. Last year, the Biden Administration also pushed federal employees to return to in-person work.

Selfish position based on the corporate real estate problem. His only focus is on how he can make money. Workers working from home do not help him.
Well run for office and make the policy or get appointed to head an agency and give up your CEO pay.

I understand things change, business environments change, and all that. But the restaurants, bars, coffee houses, just general shops — their customers are no longer there. What do these people do to earn a living when their clientele are no longer there?
I have a better idea.
Declare that anyone who hasn’t been to the office in 24 months is excused from further effort, and should consider themself terminated for cause.

If you get 15 minutes a month of actual work out of a bureaucrat it is a bleeding miracle.
The electronic office has been promised for decades. COVID was just an excuse.
If the paycheck had as reliable attendance as “work-from-home”, people would be singing a different tune.

Even if you have to walk past those sleeping in doorways, scurry past the insane, watch your step over the needles and excrement.
Even if you have to avert your eyes from the brutalist architecture in order to get through the front security doors, and past the security checkpoint in our lack-of-trust society.
Wait in line for the elevators to the 70th floor so you can crawl back into your cubicle and await your first of many useless meetings that only make completing your meaningless tasks more difficult.
Reconnect with the office politics, your lazy coworkers, your peter-principled boss, your woke HR department, and the vending machines that take your money without giving up their unhealthy goods.
You owe it to yourself, your country, and most importantly: the economy.

A fear the younger more energetic bureaucrats are the ones burning the midnight oil in order to banish oil and other essentials from our lives.
If this is the direction we're going into, ideally we'll want our government to be more like South Africa. Incompetent and corrupt. So they won't do much to interfere with our lives.

Finally, something Dimon and I agree upon.
We need to let the free market sort it out. Restaurants and etc thrive where the business is. Perhaps there is more in the suburbs now.
I am not impressed with WFH for many but employers need to do what they need to do to get the optimal work out of people. Let the market work.

If employees refuse to return to the office, their employers are free to lay them off.
I suspect we'll see that happen at Amazon, Starbucks, other corporate employers.
This will cause global warming.
