The Moral Case Against Reparations
American Thinker ^ | 09/06/2024 | John B. Carpenter

In an April 5, 2019 appearance before the National Action Network, presidential candidate Kamala Harris declared to Al Sharpton that she will sign a “reparations” commission into law. During last week’s interview on CNN, Harris affirmed that “My values have not changed.” That would include the values that deem America paying descendants of slaves monetary compensation a requirement of social justice. Social justice warriors assume it is a noble cause. But the reality is that reparations are not merely impractical but profoundly immoral. Here’s five basic reasons why the moral case is against reparations.

The Legal Problem

First, reparations, to be just, must be based on the legal definition of restitution. In the law, restitution exists to achieve an equitable remedy when the money or property is, first, wrongfully possessed and, second, traceable. Today’s calls for reparations fail to show that any money or property is currently wrongfully in anyone’s hands. Money and property (and the slaves themselves) were, indeed, wrongfully in the hands of slave-holders but not even the law is capable of re-writing history. It can only cure current injustices.

The money and property that could have been restituted after the demise of slavery is no longer traceable. Even if I’ve inherited cash and property from my slave-holding ancestors, which of it is from them? My car? My house? How much of my money? It’s all jointly owned by my wife who has no ancestors who were plantation owners. She’s not even American. Legally, since the reward for stolen labor is long ago untraceable, it’s impossible to claim any of it as belonging to a former slave. To take property from me to redistribute to someone whose ancestors had labor stolen from them would be illegal and immoral.

The “Raparayshuns” scam is a transparent attempt to buy votes with white people’s money.

It is a basic tenant of nearly every legal code that you do not hold children culpable for the crimes of their parents, nor parents for the crimes of adult children.

Good description by author.

I contend that "reparations" is a political-lingo justification for engaging in spiritual warfare to win at politics by causing voters to have:

1) perpetual victimhood even with all the real freedoms we enjoy, including nobody alive having ever experienced slavery, and

2) perpetual bitterness towards people you believe harmed you with slavery, and

3) justified by unforgiveable guilt of whites that the political class tells you can never be removed.

Completely undermining the message of Jesus' love, forgiveness, and redemption. Even to the point of the left saying past ancestors' guilt transfers to descendants. And that's even ignoring the fact that few white families owned slaves anyway. So it's a new definition of guilt by race.

I’ve done reparations calculations as part of expert witness testimony for over 40 years. I’ve posted here before my calculations that show each black needs to pay a little over $640,000 into a fund that would then be available to non-blacks for reparations. I would love to see the calculations and model they are using to justify reparations.

Only if they renounce their citizenship and are exiled from America forever , otherwise they aren’t that upset about slavery and don’t need the money

Personally, I think the big hiring surge at the IRS is in preparation for a reparations program. To the evil persons dreaming this crap up, it makes perfect sense to involve the IRS because no agency in the federal government has more access to personal financial information or greater coercive enforcement power than the IRS.

There is only one moral case for reparations - the Democrat Party should pay reparations to blacks. More than any other institution, the Democrats used racial hatred, terror toward blacks and implemented policies that actively hurt blacks, for most of the party’s history. They even started a war to keep blacks in slavery. THAT is a moral case for reparations if there ever was one.

Well done. At its base “reparations” is about envy, covetousness, and greed.

Three of my great-grandfathers fought for the Union.

Mrs. L’s great grandfather survived Andersonville.

We’ve paid our share.

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we’ve proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

The legal system is based on two components. There is the perpetrator of wrong or illegal doing that causes loss on to another party. Then there is the aggrieved party that has suffered loss through the misbehavior of the perp. The courts are there to make judgements and rulings to correct the incident in accordance with current written law.

None of the aggrieved nor the perps are alive today.

There is no such authority to issue either “Kin Punishment” nor “Collective Punishment”, never mind a both at the same time.

None of the aggrieved nor the perps are alive today.

Slavery Reparations: Money Taxed and collected by Government from those not responsible for an egregious behavior, and given to those who were not harmed by the behavior. Purely racist in it’s origins, pitting those of different color against one another. The government and it’s minions will keep a ‘processing fee’ to implement the program and ensure distribution to it’s fervent followers.

What could possibly be immoral with that? ROFLOL
