Students praise school cell phone ban: ‘I’ve been hanging out with my family, actually’

Improved focus, higher quality family time, more social interaction, and less anxiety are all products of a week-old cell school phone ban in Iowa that’s convincing officials there to spread the good news.

“Do it. Do it. It’s not as bad as you think,” Gateway High School Principal Aaron Ruff said, offering advice for schools considering limits on student cell phone use. “I think parents are well aware of what cell phones are doing to their kids. They’re seeing it at home. I think parents are behind this.”

Ruff and others in the Ottumwa Community School District recently explained to KCRG how the learning experience has improved since students were required to lock their phones away this year, following several other area districts and schools that have implemented similar policies.

The shift came from a group including students that studied the impacts of rising cell phone use on bullying, learning, and student mental health, concluding less phone use could improve all three.

“In about mid-June, we began to think and realize that our district was going to be cell phone free K-9 because it had already been determined that our elementaries were, Liberty was and Evans Junior High had piloted it in the spring and it went super well,” Ottumwa High School Principal Shelley Bramchreiber told the Ottumwa Post.

“So the question came to us what if we did a district wide ban? We began a gathering committee with students, community members, staff members, administrators, central office staff and board members. We tried to gather stakeholders from every realm to be part of this committee to see what it would look like in our schools.”

Cell phone bans in schools will just enrich an already target rich environment for school shooters.

Students disarmed AND muted.

Free killing zone.

These cell phone bans have nothing to do with helping the students. Everytime there is a school shooting the internet is flooded with people asking where are the videos. All the kids have cam phones.

That’s why alex jones and many others think these are hoaxes.

Cell phones for minors are bad news. All the crap on the internet at their fingertips. I was against my girls having them. At Christmas the in laws gave the kids phones. Wife circumvented me. Was royally pissed about it. All but one kid is out of the house. The last one met a boy on snap chat....long story short she is facing delinquency charges.
Gee wife now thinks phones are a bad idea for kids. Just another log on the divorce fire.

Interesting. Bans should not take effect until there are recording video cameras in each classroom with the capacity for all parents to dial in and see and listen to the class. At all times!

All of a sudden when teachers are being recorded by students and getting blowback sbout their marxist leftism they suddenly want the phones removed.

Nobody ever asked why 98% of teachers in the US backed such a ban. LOL, probably assumed because they care about “quality of education.”

No, it’s because they don’t want what they say and do escaping the classroom.

I should have read your post before bothering w/mine. I am glad to know I’m not the only person who sees that.

I heard (on EWTN News) that 98% of teachers backed the ban — which sounds like a press release from the Teachers’ Union to me. The ladies doth protest too much, methinks.

Social media and technology in general will be the downfall of mankind. A society can only take so many cameras watching what they do, and so many clueless busybodies flinging their opinions around the internet.

We should have stopped at the telegraph. Maybe two-way radio, but that definitely should have been it.

The world was a better place when everyone had to put 18 hours of hard labor every day into just staying alive. We have it too easy now.

The internet has shown people in the third world how bad they have it, and now the western world is flooded with third-worlders. Not to mention making it easier for them to coordinate their invasion. Yay internet.

I love computers and the internet too. Too much of my free time revolves around both. But I think humanity would be better off if neither one ever existed. You don’t miss what you never had.
