More than 10,000 US hotel workers strike during Labor Day weekend

More than 10,000 hotel workers at 24 hotels stretching from Boston to the West Coast to Hawaii went on strike early Sunday morning, disrupting travel during a busy Labor Day weekend.

The hotels are reportedly still open but guests will deal with a skeleton staff unable to provide full services. UNITE HERE, the union representing the striking workers, says they are striking not just for better pay but also better working conditions, including the return of automatic daily room cleaning that many hotels dropped during the pandemic.

“We’re on strike because the hotel industry has gotten off track,” Gwen Mills, International President of UNITE HERE, said in a statement Sunday morning. “During Covid, everyone suffered, but now the hotel industry is making record profits while workers and guests are left behind. Too many hotels still haven’t restored standard services that guests deserve. Workers aren’t making enough to support their families. Many can no longer afford to live in the cities that they welcome guests to.”

Aissata Seck, a banquet food server who has worked at Hilton Park Plaza in Boston for 18 years, said her rent has increased from $1,900 to $2,900 in the last five years. “My pay only covers my rent,” she told CNN. She is now working as an Uber driver to make ends meet.

Higher earnings does not reflect higher profits necessarily. See “Profit Margins”.

That was my first thought.
We’re not talking about jobs of Biochemistts or Aviation Engineering. Many people could be trained and uniformed to satisfy those job requirements.

A labor strike is extortion and organized crime. And it could be prosecuted as such if it weren’t protected by the 1935 National Labor Relations Act (passed by two overwhelmingly demoncrat chambers of the congress, signed by a Socialist POTUS, and protected by a SCOTUS stacked by FDR to be overwhelmingly progressive.

Don’t forget that NLRA was perpetrated by the same administration as gave us the Social Security Act.

The Indians are making money hand over fist, and putting zero back in to their properties.

She is still serving banquets after 18 years because she refuses to learn English so that she can wait on guests in the hotel restaurants.

I stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn in Pensacola last year for at least 8 nights in a row. They never cleaned my room once. Had to get additional towels and wash cloths twice.
They had a huge pile of linens in the bathroom floor when I left.

I stayed in a Homewood Suites in Pensacola two months ago for 8 nights and on day 6 they finally came to clean my room.

If I only stay a couple nights and the cleaning lady passes me in the hall and asks if i need the room cleaned…I tell her if she wants to go home early then I’m good but if she wants to stay on the clock longer then feel free to clean/straighten up.

I feel bad for the housekeeping staff because I know they get paid by the hour and have lost lots of pay over the past 4 years.

420 employees per hotel? Those must be some pretty massive hotels! Even a decent size hotel probly has maybe 50 employees... Not even close to 400, that's like Gaylord or Great Wolf or other convention center-sized hotels...
