Governor Gavin Newsom called lawmakers into a special session Saturday to address spikes in gasoline prices.
The move follows pushback Newsom received on a request to approve a series of bills that would cut energy costs for Californians and require petroleum refiners to maintain a stable inventory.
Across the nation, Californians pay the highest rates for gas at an average of $4.64 a gallon for regular unleaded, compared to the national average of $3.33, according to AAA.
Electricity bills in the state have also nearly doubled in the last decade and are expected to keep outpacing inflation through 2027 as California races to transition away from fossil fuel.
Saturday’s move marks the second time Newsom has called a special session focused on tackling the oil industry. In 2022, he called a special session to penalize oil companies for excessive profits from gasoline price spikes.
Although the order requires the special session to begin Saturday, it’s unclear when the actual hearings will begin.

States levy taxes on fuel in a few different ways, including sales taxes, excise taxes per gallon purchased at the pump, and taxes on wholesalers or retailers, which generally get passed on to consumers via increased prices. These taxes, combined with a myriad of fees (e.g., underground storage tank fees), add to the price consumers pay at the pump.
We combine these taxes and fees to calculate the total tax rate on gas for each state. The map demonstrates the wide range of tax rates across the US.
California pumps up its gas tax the most at 68.1 cents per gallon (cpg), followed by Illinois (66.5 cpg) and Pennsylvania (58.7 cpg)

Easy fix, Newsom needs to ban driving.
Subsidized fuel purchases based on income. We’re already doing that with food, utilities, housing, and Healthcare.
Remember back in 2018 that Ca voters approved a referendum to increase their taxes on gasoline. Being stupid causes pain.
He could have Kamalala address the problem:

IF the dims manage to shut down those two refineries, they will have a couple of large superfund sites on their hands. Utterly useless for decades.
The California tax on a gallon of gasoline is 59.6 cents per gallon.
The people of California want this tax or they wouldn’t have elected these marxists to office.

Newsome wants to address high gas prices in California? Let me guess the democraps will lay the blame at the feet of big oil but never admit that it is their tax and regulate fiasco that makes Californians suffer. Special fuel blends, attacks on Diesel and ICE vehicles...not to mention the extra gas tax that morons passed because there wasn’t enough money to fix roads and bridges, said the socialist slime democrats while they raided the gas taxes to pay for illegals and try try to shore up the budget that is so far in the due to their malfeasance.
Yep, the main problem he mentions, no back up when a refinery shuts down for maintenance, would not exist if California had another refinery or two to pick up the slack. And why are there no more refineries in California, hmm?
And Gavin, when those refineries operate, how close are they to the allowable air emissions, carbon and others? If they ramp up production like you suggest, will they exceed their allowable emissions limits?
And, Gavin, where will they store this excess production you demand? In above ground storage tanks? If they try to build even one new tank, it will require an environmental impact study and report. Then they will need a clean air act permit for each tank, and no telling how many other permits from different agencies. How long will all that take and how much will it cost? And how much will you help?
I think I can answer that last question, Gavin. You ain’t helping at all. ‘Cause if you would help, you would have figured this out and been helping solve the problem already.

Comically, gas prices are down significantly in my country, Kentucky. Average price is $2.90.
