Daria Korkh made a good show of a stiff upper lip as she prepared to abandon her home.
“We don’t want to, but we’ve got to,” she said bluntly. “The shops and supermarkets are closing. Medical facilities are still open, but it’s only a matter of time before the gas and electricity go.
“The shelling has become more frequent and now there are enemy drones in town. Today the first drone flew in. Everyone knew after they [the Russians] took Avdiivka that this could be expected. It’s not sudden.
Ms Korkh, a practical 39-year-old who has no children but a host of rescue animals (“the kind of pets no one else wants”) is one of thousands of Ukrainians fleeing the strategically vital city of Pokrovsk.
Russian forces have been pushing slowly towards Pokrovsk ever since they captured the strategic city of Avdiivka, 30 miles to the east, in February.
But since Ukraine pulled elite units from Donbas for its incursion into Kursk, the Russia advance has accelerated.
“I’ve never seen such speed [in a Russian advance],” the commander of a Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance unit fighting in the area told The Telegraph this week.
“It is very rapid. And our problem is the same: we don’t have infantry, we don’t have enough artillery or shells. We don’t have enough drones.”

It perplexes even Ukrainians.
Sounds like....Who wants to surrender....raise your hand !
Denis Volkov, director of the Levada Center, partially attributed the drop in Russian trust in Putin to the incursion, Agentstvo reported.
Agentstvo previously reported on August 22 that Ukraine's armored assault in Kursk has damaged Putin's image overall, citing an increase in negative and critical comments from Russians on social media.
Days into the incursion, multiple pro-war Russian military bloggers voiced their discontent on Telegram at how swiftly Kyiv's forces were reported to have seized Russian territory.
One called the situation "hell on earth" and suggested that the assault had been long-planned.

The recent Kursk area offensive was minor, of no military importance other than perhaps shortening lines and resembled more of a local opportunity than anything else.
And so? You are fighting an army that is armed with shovels and washing machines. Zeepers said so and I believe them.
Invading Russia is the bold move taken by all the greatest strategists of history.
The way the world is working now, the Kursk incursion may have been for little more than to amp up western media support for more funding.
But according to you Putin Groupies, Ukraine is fighting only with pre-pubescent teens, old women and hospital cripples
Yet they’re still able to hold off a nuclear superpower - amazing!
No wonder we’re in the 31st month already!!
Apparently, there are plenty of keyboard warriors around these parts and in the US media that don't even rise to the level of FOOL.
That there invasion of Kursk is working out really well -- NOT.
“the Kursk incursion may have been for little more than to amp up western media support for more funding”
That, and to provoke direct western engagement.
A major goal of the incursion was to help get Kamala elected.
Ukraine’s invasion of Russia is causing political chaos on Russian telegram channels.
Putin is apparently getting the blame for Russia’s defeat in in Kursk.
What the Ukrainian did is a master stroke.
They got over 3000 Russian prisoners, including young Russian conscripts which Putin had promised Russian mothers that they would never be used in the “special operation”...
These prisoners are extremely valuable for Ukraine for future prisoner swaps.
On Russian State propaganda TV they lament what happens in Kursk. And they now even dare to criticize the whole “special operation”.
The narrative is slowly changing in Russia and there are Russian sharks ready to replace Putin.
Ukraine is becoming Russia’s own Vietnam with +600.000 (including severely wounded) casualties. All the reports show 150.000 to 180.000 Russian soldiers deaths - in only +2 years of war. Way worse than what America endured in its 10 year long Vietnam war and 50.000 deaths...
Ukraines invasion into Kursk has forced Russia to bring 30.000 soldiers taken from other fronts - that was also a goal of Ukraine - to overstretch Russian forces.
The Kursk invasion also proved that Putins’s “red lines” was a bluff. NATO saw that, and is now suddenly willing to authorize Ukraine to use Nato long-distance missiles into Russia...
“All my bags are packed
I’m ready to go
Already I’m so lonesome
I could die
Don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go”
Oh, you’ll be able to go back, and when you return, you’ll even be able to continue speaking your native Russian in public without getting arrested.
The Telegraph, a once respected newspaper that has become a propaganda tool for Ukraine, is finally telling the truth.
“...could pay high price...”
Didn’t know that. Swear to God?
Do media types have any more “captain obvious” commentary and analysis?
It was a way to extend reach of thier greatest weapon to the Russian supply lines. They were using thier assets to be able to punch deeper and effect supplies. Potentially it also moves back the release point for glide bombs.
I don’t think it was a political move, this is what I saw it at first. It was about modern drone warfare is my belief. The Russians believed it was a spoiling attack, it wasn’t.
There’s gotta be a pony in here someplace!
