Cities America are spraying chemicals through their streets in response to a rise in several deadly mosquito-borne illnesses, in an unprecedented move.
Massachusetts, New York, Texas and California are among the states deploying pesticides to repel the increasingly disease-ridden insects.
The decision comes on the heels of an onslaught of mosquito-borne illnesses throughout the US, including West Nile Virus, which hospitalized White House Covid doctor Anthony Fauci this month, 'Triple E', a brain-swelling disease that has killed two Americans so far this year, and 'sloth fever', a disease transmitted from sloths to mosquitos.
Officials are spraying the streets at night when people are less likely to be outside to reduce residents' exposure to the chemicals, which can be harmful to breathe in or ingest. The doses will also be 'ultra-low volume'.
Other areas have taken equally drastic measures, including imposing curfews to limit people's exposure to mosquito bites.
A number of Americans have died from mosquito-borne illnesses this year, including a New Hampshire man who died from EEE earlier this month. It was the state's first human case in 10 years.
In Massachusetts, towns in southern Worcester County and Plymouth County have taken an aggressive approach to fighting mosquito-borne illness this month after an 80 year old man from Worcester County caught EEE - the state's first human case since 2020.
EEE is a rare but serious virus that spreads to humans via infected mosquito bites. It causes swelling in the brain, and roughly 30 percent of infected people do not survive.
To curb the spread of this virus, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health will spray the pesticide Anvil 10+10 from trucks and planes overnight, starting shortly after dusk and ending in the early morning.

There was nothing wrong with that. That DDT kept mosquito diseases and misery down. Then some non-scientist lesbo romantic writer from New England decided it made egg shells slightly thinner.
Most estimates is that her ignorant book “Silent Spring” resulted in the death of 30 to 60 million. That puts her well ahead of Hitler, and somewhere between Stalin and Mao.
I think it was something else. Hadn’t DDT been outlawed by then? No idea what it was, but it smelled pretty bad.
Those look more like Mexican immigrants than mosquitos.
Are they spraying them for skeeters or for lice?
Yep I remember the DDT trucks in the 1950's. Same deal, usually went around about dusk when the skeeters were coming out. Made a helluva cloud. I thought it was way cool.
Killed the heck out of the skeeters too.
That's why I said the CDC was doing something useful. That was the first project the agency did.
I remember the same thing, back in the 60s. I remember the same smell, in Vietnam. Years later, I wondered if it was mosquito spray, or agent orange?
That’s why I asked. I also thought the ‘80s seemed a bit late for skeeter fogging with DDT.
I don’t recall a smell associated with the neighborhood spraying I witnessed.
Those were Mexican workers but that act of hand spraying was common back then for various groups that needed to be deloused.

Although the pesticide was banned in many countries, some countries in Africa, Asia, and South America needed the pesticide for mosquito control in order to reduce the risk of malaria. In 2006, WHO supported the indoor use of DDT in African countries where malaria remained a major challenge. The organization stated that the benefits of the pesticides to African countries outweighed the adverse effects it had on the environment. India and North Korea have continued the use of the pesticides for agricultural use despite the ban. Approximately 4,000 tons of DDT are produced annually for the vector control program. It is legal to manufacture DDT in the US, though it can only be exported for use in foreign nations. DDT can only be used in the US for public health emergencies, such as controlling vector disease. Today, DDT is manufactured in North Korea, India, and China. India remains the largest consumer of the product for vector control and agricultural use. China produces 4,500 metric tons of the product of which 80–90% is used to produce Dicofol, an acaricide. African countries do not use the product for agricultural purposes but countries such as Ethiopia, South Africa, Uganda, and Swaziland use it to control malaria.
