A top Ukrainian pilot was killed when a US-made F-16 fighter jet crashed on Monday, a Ukrainian Defence Forces source told CNN.
The Ukrainian Defence Forces do not believe pilot error was behind the incident, the source added.
The pilot, Oleksiy Mes known as “Moonfish,” was killed in the crash while “repelling the biggest ever aerial attack” by Russia against Ukraine, said the source, adding that the pilot was buried on Thursday.

Multiple zeepers were having organisms over the F-16s.
That it takes thousands of hours to learn to fly an F-16 is a design failure. The software systems and the interfaces must be a real hack job.
The radar and missile system software should be able to track and identify targets as well as propose what missiles should be used and when, like a video game with a great interface. They are now commercial and publicly available augmented reality headsets that could be used to vastly improve the lethality of the F-16.
You sure read a lot into the article that wasnt presented. Almost like you were in the cockpit at the time.
How do you know he was flying low? How do you know he was chasing drones with guns? How do you know he flew into the ground?
If he was using look down shoot down radar to down he wouldnt need to be on the deck. Which would put him up at an altitude where he might be shot down with a missile.
Believe what you want, Ukraine had an air force made up of Russian MIGs, they begged for F-16s and to any objective person, the new jets would put them on an even level with Russia according to all the so-called experts.
My prediction still holds, more F-16s will crash for unexplained reasons, Russia has some modern air defenses, maybe not the world’s best, but capable. and Ukraine has inexperienced F-16 pilots because the plane has never been flown by Ukraine before, it’s like leading lambs to slaughter.
The dirty little secret is the countries giving up the F-16s, will probably acquire F-35s as replacements which benefits the MIC.
The secret is to keep ample air between the ground and the craft, at all times.
More air for me to breathe
Still no claim the F-16 was some magic weapon. It would be stupid to think that anyone could go to war and have zero losses.
Well, in the case of a war zone when the pilot is actively engaged in a fight, I doubt if that many crashes would be pilot error.
With regards to this particular incident, it is admitted to be pilot error.
I’m not a pilot, but I am a machine operator. To become a good operator a couple hundred hours are needed just to learn the moves, sounds and vibrations. Now take an fighter jet. That must take a thousand hours to learn everything including the feel of how the plane is performing. My point is, this poor guy never had the experience needed to keep it in the air.
Good people, good machinery and lots of US tax dollars going to waste.
May the pilot rest in peace along with every other poor soul, Uke or Rusky.
Was he a top F-16 pilot?
It’s not just them, it’s the media, politicians in the US and Ukraine.
Ukraine might have some success using the F-16s, in the end they have no experience flying the planes, especially in a combat situation, Russia has capable air defense systems, perhaps not the world’s greatest, but capable. It will be leading lambs to slaughter.
Sounds to me like the pilot may have tried to move up from a Sopwith Camel to an F-16 too quickly.
The United States helped pay for the F-35s that are replacing them and has paid the cost of arming them.
So they were free to the Ukrainians , but they cost America plenty and gave the Ukrainians the ability to squander and deplete a whole new level of US weapons stockpiles that we cannot afford to replace .
If one casually peruses the Western Media, it would be hard to conclude that there have been any Ukrainian losses.
Well, except for Ukie Tank Girl's skinned elbow and smeared mascara, whilst destroying another Russian column of T-14 Armatas...
I am glad you have confidence in your ability to predict the future, but you are taking credit a bit prematurely.
The dirty little secret is the countries giving up the F-16s, will probably acquire F-35s as replacements which benefits the MIC.
When was this some secret? Why would a country with 50 year old A/C not want to upgrade and make some use of the older A/C at the same time? You make it sound like that is some evil plot.
You are playing dumb. And thats ok because I get where you are on the subject. But there are many sources for the Ukraine losses available as well as the Russian losses.
We both can agree that what you broad brush as 'western media' (i.e. MSM) is biased to support the current leftest admins, and wont prioritize reporting things that make those leftists look bad.
“ ow do you know he was flying low? How do you know he was chasing drones with guns? How do you know he flew into the ground?”
It’s reported he was chasing drones over Ukrainian territory.
Do you think Russians are dumb and have high and fast drones?
Their drones are quite sophisticated, are generally subsonic, but damn fast, and hug the ground.
Yes, saying he flew into the ground is my educated guess, but that’s the cause of most such fatalities and is damn easy to do when focused on a target.
Certainly worked for me in the past.
Look down shoot down radar means you can see the stuff that is hugging the Earth FROM ABOVE.
Do you think Russians are dumb
Not completely, but I am beginning to think you might be.
poor zeepers....
Yeah, it must be the plane's fault: “The crash is being investigated and international experts will be invited to participate in the probe, the source added.”
Do the investigation, but, really, just say that it appears he was shot down.
There was a bullet or missile he just couldn't like evade. What is the harm is suggesting that, in an active battleground?
