(Kitco News) – Gold has had a breakout year as the yellow metal surged to new heights above $2,500 while its grey counterpart, silver, has struggled to keep pace, but that could soon change, according to one analyst, as silver demand is expected to increase thanks to one new technological development from Samsung.
According to retired investment professional Kevin Bambrough, Samsung has developed a new solid-state (SS) battery. The inclusion of silver as a key component, combined with the increasing demand for electric vehicles, means that demand for the grey metal will soon increase.
“The key drivers that will ramp up demand for EVs are range, charge time, battery life and safety,” Bambrough said. “Samsung's new solid-state battery technology, incorporating a silver-carbon (Ag-C) composite layer for the anode, exemplifies this advancement. Silver's exceptional electrical conductivity and stability are leveraged to enhance battery performance and durability, achieving amazing benchmarks like a 600-mile range and a 20-year lifespan and 9-minute charge.”

“With global car production standing at about 80 million vehicles per year, if 20% of these vehicles (16 million EVs) were to adopt Samsung's solid-state batteries, the annual demand for silver would be around 16,000 metric tons (16 million vehicles * 1 kg of silver per vehicle),” Bambrough said. “This would represent a significant portion of the current global silver production, which is approximately 25,000 metric tons annually, highlighting the substantial impact on the silver market.”

According to a report written by Enrico Punsalang at Ride Apart, Samsung is already working with big automakers to incorporate its SS battery tech into EVs in development. The firm has signed an agreement with Toyota to begin mass production of SS batteries in 2027, with Lexus vehicles scheduled to be among the first to integrate the new technology.

You used to occasionally still receive silver dimes in change. My mother managed a retail clothing store until retirement and she would “buy” any silver from the change drawer. Now the only time you might see silver is when some idiot robs his grandma or neighbor and spends it to buy a pack of Newport and the clerk is clueless about its value. The last time I received a silver dime in change was about 10 years ago.
In other words, this "new" battery technology is not yet ready for prime time. Just like all other "breakthroughs". that have been announced over the past 10 years.
Even if this panned out it does not solve major problems. Such as there is not even close to enough electricity capacity necessary to charge a lot of them. And most of that energy comes form fossil fuels.
To many details not given like battery weight. Fire potential. Cold/Heat functionality.

Silver in 2010s about 45 an ounce. Silver today about 29 an ounce.
A crap investment if one thinks silver holds value.

My supermarket installed machines to convert one’s loose change to paper money. (Less a “fee”).
I sadly watched as thousands of unexamined silver-colored coins were fed into that great maw.

Silver coins are rare in pocket change but copper pennies are common.
Pre 1982 copper pennies are worth 2 1/2 cents each for the copper value!
Once in a while I would come across a silver nickel minted during WWII. But that ended between 5 to 10 years ago when the bank wouldn’t have any rolls of coins to hand out.

Most of the ‘miracle battery breakthroughs’ that get posted here at FR are BS, but this one seems fairly reasonable to me. And it is Samsung, not some fly-by-night startup looking for investors to scam, or university science lab that doesn’t grasp what it takes to do things in the real world.
I hope it turns out to be true, and successful.
And all that is required is more Silver than is available, to build batteries that cost 4X the current price, and require charge voltages/rates that are not available either!
Better idea, just scrap the whole EV madness.
Good for me that I will never be buying ANY new car, just keeping my classic ICE.
Not worried about fuel going away either, new multi-million dollar station was just built here.
Pretty certain those investors know how long their investment is good for.
So certain that fuel will be available for the rest of MY life.
Shoot, I long for the days of 1994 when I worked for (evil corporation - in a lot of ways, actually) but my corporate apartment was paid for, my airline tickets were paid for, my dinner was $30 reimbursed every night, the rental car was paid for (either by week or when I flew home), the parking was paid for, if I had a hotel it was paid for (I always booked one with Continental Breakfast) - but it was 60 hours a week with Big 6 often plus travel time.
One client was literally not even 2 blocks from the hotel - the rental wouldn’t even get warm by the time I hit their parking lot - and they actually pretty much closed up at 5:30=6:00 every night - once a month I’d have to spend about 2 hours doing my expense report.
Shoot I miss even 1996 - back then you still had $500 bills and even $1,000 bills - I had some of those back then - you felt like you often had some good cash on you.
Boy those days are long gone.
They want you in ev’s because they can control you through the utilities. And make you pay a lot to charge it.
They cant shut down gas companies because they and the govt forces will still require gas, but they want all of us out of gas-driven vehicles.

Sigh...solid state is the future but using semi precious metals is a no no from the start. Aluminum graphene is the way. Aluminum is the third most abundant element after Silicon and O in the earth’s crust. It’s triple valent vs lithium one that means anything lithium does aluminium triples it at the base faraday level. Graphene was Gucci expensive until the University of Queensland perfected and commercialized a methane to Graphene process that cranks it out by the metric tonne. The Ai-Grp cells are nothing short of a paradigm shift. They have 900+wh/g densities, 20000+ full DOD cycle life and 20+ year calender life expectancy. They charge at up to 60C rates and are completely not flammable. 60C is one minute from 0% to 100% that’s not possible for an EV with current HVDC standards but for phones , laptops and tablets you could one minute charge those levels of Wh from a 240v 50hz line that’s the global standard every where but backwards USA. The University of Queensland has already done third and now industry testing of its aluminum cells it’s how quickly can they scale up to the market. Their cell tech is not rivaled by anything lithium has to offer.

You are wrong. They can and have shut down gasoline stations before. Katrina, Harvey ,Andrew to name a few times. The gov can also just order the dozen or so refineries to not ship fuel outside the plant gate expect for government convoys to government fuel depots under government troop transport. The big companies would comply or face nationalization they absolutely would comply and only left the government have fuel. If you think thstwould defy fedzilla for the consumer you are delusional. The Fed’s could dry up the gasoline supply over night if they chose too.
The Fed’s can never turn off the sun and my grid independent solar power system will be making power in the morning regardless of what the grid is doing. My model 3 has a unlimited supply of “fuel” from th at giant thermonuclear fireball in the sky. You have it backwards with solar panels an EV is the essence of independence. No one has a oil well and certainly not a functional oil refinery in their backyard. I know I know but the remote kill switch. Every car that has onstar,bkuelink,or any of the other services has a remote kill switch even if the service is not activated or in use. It’s hard wired to the cars ECU and it works from their end regardless of if the subscriber is active. Every car after 2026 will have this in some form per fedlaw that means ICE too every car that leaves the dealership will have a remote kill switch ICE or ev or hybrid doesn’t matter. More than half the new cars from 2015 or so already have onstar or the equivalent in them so they already have a kill switch. Simple fact is you won’t be able to hide at some point you will have the face the commies head on or commit crimes to be left alone and when not if they find out about it then it’s head on time anyways. Using a GPS and cell freq jammer to jam the kill switch is a federal level felony with ten years plus sentencing. You can’t cut the wire, that’s not how it works it’s part of the cars ECU without which the car cannot function you have to intercept the signal the hardware is innate to the functionality of the engine computer. Sure you can keep a 1970s car running but state’s like California will just make it illegal to register an older vehicle and operate it on the road. They are one party rule and they pass the laws who’s to stop them.They already did that for 2010 or older diesel trucks it’s illegal to drive them unless you replaced the motor with a 2010 or newer one.
