Kamala Harris Will Pay You Not to Work
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 14, 2024 | Matt Weidinger

A recent study confirms that universal basic income—no-strings-attached benefit checks offered to recipients regardless of need or contribution to the program—discourages work. That’s relevant to the presidential race. Kamala Harris has called more than once for paying UBI-like benefits.

Participants in the UBI program worked nearly 1½ hours less a week on average, and unemployment rose. Other adults in recipient households reduced their work effort, too. Overall, the study found for every dollar in benefits, “total household income excluding the transfers fell by at least 21 cents.”

As vice president, Ms. Harris cast the deciding vote to create a temporary UBI for parents through a significantly expanded child tax credit in 2021. Tens of millions of households collected these payments, which grew to as much as $3,600 a child, even as the program’s work requirement and work incentive features were suspended. A University of Chicago study calculated that if the change were made permanent, it would result in 1.5 million parents exiting the labor force. But the temporary policy lapsed when Sen. Joe Manchin refused to support its extension without a work requirement. The administration’s fiscal 2025 budget would revive the costly 2021 expansion, but they aren’t the only ones flirting with budget-busting proposals. On Sunday, Sen. J.D. Vance called for increasing the child tax credit to $5,000 and making it available to “all American families,” though he didn’t say whether he would make it conditional on work.

As a senator, Ms. Harris proposed two even larger UBI programs that would have displaced more work. In 2019 she introduced her “signature” bill proposing a UBI for lower-income adults, including childless adults.

Those working will be taxed more and more to support those not working. How about Kamala and Tim stop working and we pay them NOTHING.

“Kamala Harris Will Pay You Not to Work”

NO. Kamala will force taxpayers to pay you not to work.

And that will adversely affect the economy, hurting everyone in the process.

Kalalamala and ilk paying bums not to work- meanwhile:

“Biden-Harris administration using taxpayer money to mask Medicare premium hikes before election: critics
‘The program is in a death spiral,’ former domestic policy adviser to former President Trump says

Under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which was intended to cap out-of-pocket drug costs for Medicare beneficiaries, insurers are poised to significantly hike monthly premiums, with average bids for Part D plans expected to triple by 2025.

In response to potential voter backlash, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rolled out a three-year “demonstration project” to subsidize these premiums, aiming to keep them artificially low. However, despite the appearance of relief, some critics are saying that taxpayers will fund a dramatic increase in subsidies — from $30 per recipient per month in 2024 to $142.70 in 2025”

It's much worse than discouraging people from working - it facilitates people working in the black economy doing less than desirable things dealing drugs and participating in freelance hustling and scams.

Or supplements people's employment in the onlyfans or sex worker economy.

Even worse, idle people receiving government benefits have plenty of time to become welfare entrepreneurs who are pros at track]king down government benefits.

Having to show up for work everyday is a good thing for most people. Most of the people I know who are not working are spending their days gaming and smoking pot in their parents basement. .

>>Those working will be taxed more and more to support those not working.

Or, the Fed will simply print however many quadrillion dollars the government wants to spend.

Why not just guarantee every American - man, woman and child - an income of $200,000 per year. We’ll all be rich!!!!

Because Deep State knows very well that the ignorant, the ill, the impaired, the impoverished are far easier to rule.

Deep State’s frontmen are stupid.

The people hiding behind them are not.

Universal Basic Income seems like a horrible idea to me. Do it the old fashioned way like many of us had to...pay into S.S. all your working days, & after that you can have Universal Basic Income...while it lasts that is. Actually, it could turn out that you get better off than when you were working (or both husband & wife were working) if things work out in the right order.

If I got UBI, I would use it to pay all my debts and save for retirement while I keep working. YMMV.

But of course, the inflation this would cause with printy-money would probably void out all my goals for it. Not a good idea.

Don’t worry. We can always import an unlimited supply of illegals to make up for the shortfall in work. Of course, they will get UBI as well.
