I don’t support his decision, but this is America; it’s a free country. This is disappointing, but other matters need attending, like winning the 2024 election. Kyle Rittenhouse garnered national attention for shooting three men in self-defense during the Kenosha riots in 2020. He later navigated through the conservative media sphere. Still, he’s taking a beating after he declared he won’t be supporting Donald Trump, citing his record on gun rights (via NBC Montana):
Rittenhouse claimed Trump’s record on gun rights shows he would compromise on Second Amendment issues.
“Unfortunately, Donald Trump had bad advisors making him bad on the Second Amendment, and that is my issue,” he argued. “If you cannot be completely uncompromisable on the Second Amendment, I will not vote for you, and I will write somebody else in.”
The Trump administration banned bump stocks, which enable semi-automatic guns to mimic the fire rate of machine guns, in a regulation later found to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. The former president also signed the Fix NICS Act, which increases accountability for states that don’t upload certain records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
Rittenhouse pledged to write in former Rep. Ron Paul, a Texas conservative who has supported improving public safety by increasing the number of guns in communities.

Just how well do they think their most important issue will fair if Trump doesn't win?
The idiocy is strong in these people.
He never asked to be some sort of standard bearer. Just a good guy with a gun who was in a bad situation.
I support people pealing off and supporting Paul. It’s a
great idea. It will really send a message. If we can
only get enough people to do so, we’ll hand Harris a four
year term and end the nation as we know it. /s
It will be the last election.
She’ll preserve our gun rights and so many others. /s
This is such a lame move, it’s embarrassing.
The guy had to fight for his life in court at the age of 17 and took any and all help he could get.
Now he has to pay it back.
I don’t hold it against him.
They took gun rights out of the platform. Some people believe in gun rights.
He’s supporting Ron Paul who is in his 90’s!
If each candidate were held to some level of purity or standard of excellence, then we could all pick people who are not even candidates for the office.
Of course, he's welcome to do as he pleases, but I don't believe it's going to have the impact he thought it would.
He will have NO gun rights if Harris and her cohorts are elected. This reminds me of a friend’s elderly aunt, a devout Catholic and activist in the Right to Life campaign who told her she can’t vote for Trump because of his “personality”. So she either does not vote or votes for Harris and totally ignores Trump’s record of appointing justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, the FBI’s targeting of conservative Catholic and prolife groups, the Administration’s animus toward parochial schools, etc. She apparently would rather have socialism because a supposedly nice girlish chuckle from a leftwing idiot.
BYE forever✌️ I can stomach a lot of things - but backstabbing millions who supported you at your lowest point. Then turning on Trump right after he got shot. Can't stomach it - won't put up with it - forgotten forever. pic.twitter.com/7TJGfbwk4R— Catturd ™ (@catturd2) August 2, 2024
He’s doing what the people who paid for his defense are asking him to.
I seriously doubt it will have any effect.
Trump supporters aren’t going to switch just because a wet-behind-the-ears kid tells them to.
He’s young and dumb. How many people idiot republicans voted for Ross Perot back In the 90’s. Clearly this young man is serious about second amendment and wasn’t thrilled with trumps bump stock ban.
Stop. People were thrilled when others voted for Ross Perot. The young all got onboard.
Still displaying the wisdom that led him to carry a loaded AR on the streets of downtown Kenosha.
He’s just a typical dumb 21 year old, with a lot more baggage than most, and now he’s being used by someone who give him money and elevates his status while saying dumb 21 year old stuff.
If Kyle votes in TX, he cannot write-in Ron Paul because Paul is not an announced candidate. He can’t simply write in Ron Paul because TX requires write-in candidates to file for the spot. There is no general write-in line; does he know this, or is he back in IL?
Hyperbole. I doubt that anyone is infuriated. Clickbait.
I doubt you will find someone who believes in it more than me, but there are also some of us who understands how this "politics" stuff works, and some who don't.
Making a public announcement that you are voting a write in during the most critical election we have ever faced as a nation, is just attention whore drama.
This isn't about gun rights, this is about "look at me! Look at me!"
There is a choice between a person that will absolutely fight to take away every gun right we possess, and another that will protect them, but won't say so publicly so as to deprive the enemy of another talking point to rally their base.
I used to be the leader of a gun group in my state, and we accomplished a lot. I knew that the best way to secure gun rights is to get the public believing in gun rights and getting them behind us in supporting gun rights.
The best way to do this was to make the public comfortable with people carrying guns, and the best way to do that was to get the state to issue licenses to carry guns.
I fought with other members of the group that were so "purist" on the issue that they objected to the idea that the state had any right to issue "licenses" to carry a gun.
I told them I agreed with them in principle, but as a practical matter, the only way you were going to get the public comfortable with the idea of people carrying around guns is to create a state licensing and training program.
People will say "Oh! Well if the STATE says they are qualified and gives them a "license", then I guess its okay."
I told them that once we got the issuing of licenses to be routine, and the public became comfortable with people carrying guns, then we could push for lessening the restrictions and/or training requirement, with an ultimate goal of getting the state to eventually recognize constitutional carry.
I pushed for this, my gun group was very instrumental in getting it to happen in my state, (Many of our members were at the Governor's signing ceremony) and now my state has recognized "constitutional carry", and our gun rights are more secure here than they ever was before I came along to tackle the issue.
What I articulated back in 1994 worked *EXACTLY* as I said it would. People here are comfortable with people carrying guns.
This is how you do politics right. I remember I had a lot of trouble with the hard core people, but even they eventually acknowledged that my methodology produced real, measurable and beneficial results.
Rittenhouse and others ought to shut up if they have any sense. If they are such purists that they can't support Trump, they shouldn't be so stupid as to think trying to get people to not vote for Trump is going to do anything beneficial for them.
This is the dumbest thing Kyle can do, and I pretty much believe other fools put him up to it.
We’re going to need every vote we can get, and if some stupid
young kid costs us this election, there were be absolute hell
to pay for every one of us.
We back him plenty when he needed it. He needs to be a team
player now.
