The recent surge in migration across the southern border could help slash the federal deficit by nearly $1 trillion over the next decade, according to a recent report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
The CBO estimates the immigration surge will create $1.2 trillion in federal revenue over the next decade, mostly from income taxes and spending by the estimated 8.7 million migrants living in the U.S. during that time. Those same migrants would cost the federal government just $300 billion in health care and other costs, according to the estimate, bringing the net benefit to $900 billion.
The new study builds on an extensive body of research showing immigrants are a boon to the economy, especially at the federal level. Immigrants have federal taxes withheld from their paychecks, and pay sales tax, property tax and more.
But it includes one big caveat: the total doesn’t factor in the costs of border crossings to state and local governments, which in some cases have spent heavily to accommodate the massive influx of asylum seekers.

The US government spends about $18,000/US resident per year.
If Jose and Maria Ilicto had two children, they would have to pay $72,000 in federal taxation annually to fund their per capita share. That $72,000 is probably more than their likely income.
It will cost nearly half a million dollars on average to put a kid through a K-12 public education in New York City.
