A Queens Criminal Court sentenced the parents of a teenage driver Monday for crimes their then-16-year-old allegedly committed back in May of 2023. This prosecution is believed to be the first of its kind—at least in New York—in which the parents are held responsible for the actions of their children.
On May 17, the now-17-year-old was allegedly driving at 101 mph in a 2005 BMW 3 Series on North Conduit Avenue in Queens when he lost control and crashed into a parked UPS truck. The teenage driver still had a junior license, which means he was supposed to be driving with a 21-year-old adult, or older, in the passenger seat. However, instead of an adult, 14-year-old Fortune Williams was in the car with him. Tragically, Williams didn’t survive the crash.
According to NBC4 New York, the teenage driver—whose name has been withheld due to his age—is being charged with several crimes, including manslaughter.
Since the driver is still a teenager that required the supervision of an adult, his parents—Sean Smith, 40, and Deo Ramnarine, 43—pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child. Smith is the one who bought the teen driver the BMW, and both parents were allegedly aware their son was driving the car illegally but did not stop him.
A school administrator notified the parents that their son was driving to school, and he was reportedly given a ticket in 2022 for driving without a license.

And not wearing seat belts in 2024? How could she get ejected if wearing a belt?
But 101 mph in a 35 mph in Queens - that deserves its own personal liability for the kid.
Smith was the only parent to be sentenced to probation—three years worth—but both will have to attend a 26-week parenting class and a Victim Impact Panel Program.
The teenage driver was reportedly doing 101 mph on a 30-mph street when he hit the UPS truck, ejecting Williams from the passenger seat. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene. The UPS driver was getting into his truck when it was struck, and he was thrown to the ground with several injuries. Thankfully, he survived.
We should raise the age for enlistment to 21. And while we're at it, you shouldn't be allowed to vote until you're 21.
yet he could have been an illegal with no license and been ok, could of gotten an abortion, and could have had a sex change with no issues at all at that age.
Who would be held responsible if the kid was driving somewhere for the purpose of “transitioning?”
Parents aren’t allowed to know such things.
>>There should be some kind of punishment for the kid as well, besides knowing he cause the death of a friend.
From the article...

Shades of Nicki Catsouris. But this kid lived.
They buried the lede.
This novel concept of law is spreading. Wait till it hits Chicago! The jail will be full of parents.
Voting age should be 35.
They’re everywhere, they’re everywhere. Grade schoolers riding the streets, no parent supervision, no registered side by sides, adults tearing down the roadway. . . on the highway, in town, etc. etc. etc. Motorcycle wrecks abound . . .and this in in rural America. Whatever happened to the bicycle of yesteryear. . . I guess it met its fate along with the land line telephone.

I didn’t read all the particulars but I’m guessing that the parents routinely allowed him to drive without someone over 21 in the car. And 101 in a 35 zone? That is not only crazy, it is stupid crazy.
Parents have no say so over whether their child gets gender reassignment, medication or surgeries, but they’re responsible for any of their children’s actions. Do I have that right?
I’m sorry for posting the wrong person. It should have been Stars & Stripes Forever instead of spelling the and causing it to turn into something totally different.

I’m glad the parents were charged. They were notified previously that their brat was driving to school. Somebody needs to answer for a young girls death.
It used to be until the boomers cried. And when they do, they get what they want.
No pictures of the parents... Hummm....
And there was no "allegedly" about it. The school informed them and he got a ticket. They would have been informed by two sources and apparently did not take the car, the keys or attempt to restrain him in any way.
Mostly I am not on board with punishing the parents for something their offspring did because, apart from locking them in their room, there is a limit to what a parent can do. But in this case they definitely facilitated.
“Sean Smith, 40, and Deo Ramnarine, 43”
Is that daddy and mommy or two daddies?
