McDonald's has given up on its bid to sell meat-free beef burger in America.
US president Joe Erlinger has said the McPlant has been ditched because customers did not want fake meat.
The chain had been testing the McPlant at several hundred restaurants in California and Texas since trials began in late 2021.
Developed with Beyond Meat, it was made from pea and rice proteins.
While it has flopped in the US, it has been a hit in the UK, Germany, Holland and Portugal.
But there is little chance of a return to America.
McDonald's is now shifting its focus to chicken, which has become more popular among its customers than beef, partly due to its lower cost.
Salads, which were taken off US menus at the start of the pandemic, will also not return, Erlinger said.
Those that want salads are going to dedicated sala chains like Chopt, Sweetgreen and Cava.
'If people really want salads from McDonald's, we will gladly relaunch salads,' Erlinger said at the Global Food Forum, according to Bloomberg.
'But what our experience has proven is that's not what the consumer's looking for.'
It is the second bit of major menu news in a week - the other being about the return of an item with a cult following.
The McRib - seasoned boneless pork dipped in tangy BBQ sauce and topped with chopped onions and pickles - is returning to America later this year.

How long until they start using fake meat and not telling anyone?
They switched from frying in beef tallow to vegetable oil the first time.
Now they can call it the McFaceplant.
Coming soon to a McDonald's near you.
Well OK, here then we've got something else not QUITE as industrial and nasty for you. Don't forget your drink. /s
“(I eat McDonald’s, I just don’t tell anyone, right?)”
LOL, I think I ate there at least twice a week for the past month (great deals in their app). But I like to blast McDonald’s because it makes me look more ‘sophisticated’ than the ‘little people’ who often post here.

Understood, sir! I’ll keep it under my hat... won’t blow your cover. :-)
Thanks NT! If word gets out, how can I face other FReepers?
Meat-free ,Why Vegetarians would never eat there
Agreed. Mc plant is more suitable as Biden’s nickname
Good analogy.
Sort of like making world wide headlines is now flipped to “quietly confirms”.
Even my cat knew this plant hooey wasn’t going to sell.
Did any vegetarians even entertain McDonalds. I just don’t picture them sitting around their drum circles thinking, You know, if McDonalds had a vegetarian hamburger I would definitely go there.”
But if they remove all the disgusting food from their menu, what will they sell?
“McDonald’s quietly confirms it is killing off one of it’s most divisive menu items ever”
“As if any of their other ‘food’ is edible.”
We are so fortunate that we have alimentary canals that passed these chem laden foods successfully through our system!
McPlant was the name of it? Ha!
