Republican senator blocks ban on bump stocks for guns brought by Democrats
NBC News ^ | 6/18/24 | By Sahil Kapur and Frank Thorp

Senate Democrats sought to pass legislation Tuesday banning bump stocks for firearms after the Supreme Court overruled a previous ban, but a single Republican objected on behalf of his party, effectively stalling the bill.

Backed by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., sought “unanimous consent” to pass his BUMP Act that would prohibit the devices, which modify semi-automatic weapons to fire bullets more quickly.

The New Mexico senator said he’s a firearm owner who sees no purpose for bump stocks other than to facilitate mass shootings, as in Las Vegas in 2017, when a gunman killed dozens of people at a music festival and more than 500 people were injured.

[snip]

But the bill was met with an objection from Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., blocking it from moving forward. The objection was backed by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and many other Republican senators, marking a turnaround after many of them championed a bump stock ban imposed by the Trump administration after the Las Vegas massacre.

Good for Ricketts!

I'm a voter who sees no purpose for Democrat Senators but alas, here we are, practically overrun with them and with insufficient support to ban them from the public.

This story is full of crappy Democrat spin.

Senator Ricketts didn’t “block” a ban on bump stocks. He objected to passing the legislation by “unanimous consent” because he wanted all Senators on the record as voting for or against the measure that did much more than just ban bump stocks, but banned anything that “materially increased the firing rate of a semiautomatic weapon.”

This bill would have banned any aftermarket trigger that was lighter or smoother than a factory trigger. It has been argued that it might even ban other aftermarket parts such as lighter recoil springs if they increased the cycle rate of the semiautomatic weapon in any way.

It was a very bad bill.

I am for the 2nd. I am a gun owner.

BUTT

I am also a lying anti gun FUDD who would take your rights away.

Because it is far more important that we disarm the people so we can take over.

Fake news! Trump endorsed this as president for the good of the American people. Just like lockdowns, big pharma blank checks and unblinding the justice system.
Not supporting these things is never trumpism.
We need him because birx had said we are going to die of bird flu. I guess she will get the next presidential commendation since fauci retired.

Headline broken.

“Patriotic Senator Blocks Unconstitutional Infringement upon Fundamental, Civil, Natural, God-given, Constitutionally-guaranteed HUMAN RIGHT to Keep and Bear Arms brought by Grandstanding Democrat Totalitarians”

There.

I fixed it for you.

Bump stocks do not make a semiautomatic rifle more effective for any purpose other than emptying a magazine quickly. They really are not useful for anything other than firing into a crowd since their operation essentially relies on moving the rifle while firing which throws off aim. I don’t see any real sporting use, unless spraying the fire range is a sporting use, or you are going to fire into a herd of buffalo.

I could be wrong.

Kind of stupid to ban a piece of plastic. A rubber band or piece of string can do the same thing

“for guns brought by Democrats”

It might not be a bad idea to ban Democrats from having guns.

I’m in favor of banning guns brought by Democrats.

Everyone else can have whatever.

Mentally ill people shouldn’t have weapons.

(Stupidly written headline)

I misread it as “for guns bought by Democrats” and temporarily got excited about a Republican growing a spine.

I don’t see any real sporting use

"Sporting use" has nothing to do with the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

RKBA isn't about "sports", or even about stopping street criminals, although those activities are protected.

RKBA is about killing tyrants.

LOL! That’s EXACTLY how I read it! That’s actually what the sentence means. But we already know “journalists” today are borderline illiterates.

Outlawing bump stocks could be seen as a safety measure. I could be wrong, and welcome correction, but as far as I know, it’s just an adolescent Rambo fantasy device, unworthy of real marksmen.

Outlawing all weapons could be seen as a safety measure.

Ask your girl Bessie "The Injun Princess" Warren. She'll tell you all about it.

it’s just an adolescent Rambo fantasy device

Who cares? "Shall not be infringed". Learn it. Love it. LIVE it.

unworthy of real marksmen.

ROFL!!! I picture you with your nose about 30 degrees in the air saying that with more than a faint hint of pseudo-upper-class disdain ...

No. I don't own one, nor have I any desire to do so. That's not the point. Government over-reach and violation of the Constitution is the point.

I have used bump stocks. My buddy had a bunch of ammo to burn.

It was fun burning up his ammo. A sporting use.

I never brought one I prefer hitting what I am shooting at.

I spent some time shooting real machine guns.

Tripod fixed positioned one have real uses.

Sub guns are great house close quarter weapons.

Others not so much.

I was curious how many posts before that came up. Thank you, this is not about bump-stocks now and never has been only about bump-stocks.
