“The investments that Russia had have matured. So Russia’s funds are sitting in cash, but they’re generating income for the institution which Russia has no claim on,” she concluded.
The G7 agreed on the American proposal Thursday during a summit in Italy. The move allows the world leaders to tap into the interest being accumulated at European banking institutions from the frozen assets to the tune of $50 billion.
Yellen added that the G7 has made it clear to Moscow that the actual assets will remain frozen until Russia agrees to pay for the damages Ukraine has sustained over the past two years of the war, which the Kremlin started...
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who attended the G7 summit, thanked the world leaders for approving the loan as his nation continues to fight against the Russian incursion.
“I am grateful to our partners for their belief in us and our victory,” he said in a post on X...

What's not to love?
The forgot the quotes around “legal.”
Since Napoleon, warriors have learned not to oppose Russia in winter or you’ll get your assets frozen.🥶
A $50 Billion ‘loan’? That’s laughable. Not a penny will ever be seen.
Thou shalt not steal.
So you’re against Russia’s attempts to steal land from 3 neighboring countries?
(btw, it’s not stealing here - the assets are still in safe keeping - but the interest they generate is not Russia’s)
Biden INSISTS to make this war with and about the USA. I would call this a provocation. I thought by FREEZING these assets they would come screaming for MERCY.
I’m okay with us minding our own business. Billions of dollars spent over there for NOTHING. We need roads, schools, infrastructure and it’s all pi$$ed away over there.
We're about to find out.
Send Biden and all of the politicians AND their families over there to the front line if it’s so important to them.
She's as brain-damaged as The Tater.
So you're for the 2014 coup of a democratically elected government, for teasing NATO membership for Ukraine, massing weapons and troops on the Russian border, reneging on the Minsk agreements, shelling/murdering the Russian-speaking people of Ukraine, etc.
“The forgot the quotes around “legal.””
They’ll find out just how ‘legal’ this stunt is when the US dollar and the Euro become RADIOACTIVE to the rest of the world, which is VERY QUICKLY happening, based on the past week (all Russian trade now and Chinese Yawns and the Saudis putting an end to the Petrodollar).
That and the Saudi petrodollar deal is now busted, Biden has fixed our wagon but good. We have sent the message “don’t be an ally/trading partner to the US or it will come back on you”.
“Thou shall not steal”! Theft is theft. God apparently is out of the picture. That is a tell for the future. Very sad!
👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
Very little of the funds ‘given’ to the Ukraine (loaned or not) benefit the citizens. Money goes to the corrupt Zelensky and some of his henchmen. The US pays for the Ukraine’s government salaries, pensions, emergency services. What do you think Z does with Ukrainian dollars set aside for those services? It’s just money laundering another way. Much foreign aid secretly goes to the elites awarding such funds.
A few months ago Congress supposedly awarded the Ukraine 65 billion dollars in aid. Only about 10 billion was expected to leave the United States.
I’m tired of the unelected elites living off common citizens. Zelensky owns mansions - why should I get excited that the Euro elites are now givin euro citizen dollars to the Ukraine?
The Ukraine is losing and has no plan for winning. They put forth lies as strategies and as one analyst said, NATO continues to try a series of provocation efforts to goad Russia in an effort to get the war the West’s so-called elites ‘need’.
Many thanks.
Especially coming from a beloved and highly esteemed FReeper such as you.
"Short Pants" Blinken claims he's working on it.
Probably by threatening Saudi Arabia.
It was a treaty that expired. I doubt we threatened anything. The Sauds looked at our inflation and deficit and said we are circling the economic drain.
