Tupperware shuts down only remaining US plant, moves manufacturing to Mexico as over 100 workers laid off

Tupperware Brands announced it will be closing its South Carolina factory — the company’s last remaining plant in the US — and laying off more than 100 workers.

The iconic plastic food container company will shift all of its manufacturing operations to Mexico, where many of its products sold in the US and Canada are already made.

The shuttering of the facility in the small town of Hemingway will result in the layoffs of 148 employees, according to the company, which is headquartered in Orlando.

Layoffs are set to begin in September with a closure date scheduled for January 14, 2025, WCBD reported.

“It’s important to note this decision is not a reflection of the performance of the Hemingway team,” Tupperware told the outlet in a statement.”

“We appreciate each of our valued team members and the many years of service they have dedicated to our salesforce and to the Company.”

The Hemingway plant, Tupperware’s sole manufacturing site in the US, was sold in 2023.

Eligible employees will be offered severance packages and early retirement. The company also pledged to help connect them with other companies for employment.

It’s just the reality of cost to produce

Would’ve happened no matter who is president

They are publicly held and have even greater responsibility to the shareholders to produce a positive return

We would have been much better off had he been elected.

Most Americans are locked into the two-party mentality though. So much so that when a REALLY serious candidate presents themself, they can't see past their partisanship to vote for that candidate.

We are held hostage by a majority who lack vision.

At least for Republicans, a lot of it is fear. Can America really survive Democrats if they had an assailable hold on America?

And American politicians have a right to put tariffs on what is now a foreign made product.

Exporting Tupperware back into the US from Mexico is made profitable thanks to low-to-zero import tariffs, this a gift to corporations from our political class.

I’m amazed it took this long. Tupperware makes the best plasticware in the biz, but the prices are out of this world. Like it or not, few will pay as much for them as it costs for Corning glassware. Rubbermaid and Sterilite aren’t quite as good, but way cheaper. And foreign makes of multiple origins are always nipping at their heels, although Walmart has so far held the line in stocking its store shelves with only Sterilite and/or Rubbermaid.

Perot had appeal and was right on NAFTA but his Perot Systems business (after EDS) made his millions off of gov contracts, -he was pissed at Bush when he was governor for spurning contract offers and then tried to get him to go to work with Perot. During the Presidential race Perot pulled out of the race betraying the trust of his backers (I was there-people couldn’t believe it) and essentially endorsed Clinton and only got back in when Clinton started to lose his lead, essentially giving us Clinton and helped usher in years of Democratic rule and more one world gov

This abandonment of the USA for “profit” can only end in hell for us.

Or rather hell for our standard of living for everyone except the big shareholders.

Truly this is horrifying. If we can’t even have mold injection plants that rely on mostly machines and relatively few workers what can we still do here?????

We can’t all have YouTube channels , only fans or be waiters.
