‘Catastrophic failure’ on Teton Pass road near Idaho border. No timeline for reopening
Idaho Statesman ^ | 08 June 2024 | David Pace

After two days with a mudslide and landslide, Wyoming State Highway 22 over Teton Pass has “catastrophically failed” and is expected to be closed for the long-term, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation.

On Thursday, the road was temporarily closed after eight-inch cracks developed in the roadway at milepost 12.8.

Department crews and a contracted team from Evans Construction started working in the region to “construct a detour around the damage, but the landslide continued to move, taking out the whole road,” the department reports.

On Friday, due to “continued movement, the crews had been working to remove asphalt from the roadway in an effort to minimize the weight on the unstable ground and reduce the driving force pushing the movement,” according to the department.

They intended to reconfigure the road closer to the mountain “in shoe fly detour configuration,” prior to the roadway’s total failure. No crew members were injured or equipment damaged in the landslide.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation also reported Saturday morning that Friday’s “mudslide at milepost 15 on Teton Pass, has breached the roadway with mud and debris, overwhelming the channeled drainage ditch and culvert.”

Dispatched crews, with assistance from the Idaho Department of Transportation, continued to remove mud and debris Saturday morning at that location, the department reported.

It looks like a bridge is the only way to go.

Wow, suddenly Idaho Falls is a lot farther from Jackson (about an hour in summer conditions).

Now that’s a really good one. WD40 for road repair.

How is that even fixable? A bridge or a new section of roadway on the other side of the collapse?

I can't even begin to imagine how long this is going to take to fix.

And looking at the map, there's roads the residents of Victor (many of whom work in Jackson Hole) can take but it's going to add a lot of distance and a lot of time to their commute. Not to mention, these detours will now be gridlocked with traffic.

For any FReepers not in the know, Jim is referring to this handy flow chart. I use it whenever I have a home appliance breakdown. And I haven’t had to call a repairman in decades.

Except a lot of people who work in Jackson Hole live in Victor.

As with all of Biden's administration, he checks boxes.

That's all that's required.

I had fatal brain cancer.

By spraying WD40 into my mouth, the cancer cells just flushed away.

I used duct-tape to tape my head closed after I used a pen to dig out the remaining cancer cells.

I've traveled this road both directions many times in the last 24 years. It is very steep and windy. A shorter path between Jackson and Idaho Falls. The alternative path is MUCH longer. People who commute daily between IF and Jackson are going to have to rethink the practicality of continuing the work arrangements. Tourists can still take the long way to Jackson on the way to Grand Teton National Park and the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It just burns a lot more time and gas.

Wow, suddenly Idaho Falls is a lot farther from Jackson (about an hour in summer conditions).

Exactly. I normally travel from Pocatello to IF, then up SR20 to the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Most of the time, the return trip home is just the reverse. Less often, the route goes south through Grand Teton National Park. Upon arrival at Jackson, there is an option to take the more difficult, but shorter SR22 over Teton Pass or the long way down SR26. Now that the option is off the table, the trips south through Jackson will happen less often.
