IDF chief: Israel nearing decision on whether to launch war against Hezbollah

2024. (Ayal Margolin/Flash90) IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi said Tuesday that Israel is close to making a decision regarding Hezbollah’s daily attacks on northern Israel amid the Gaza war.

“We are approaching the point where a decision will have to be made, and the IDF is prepared and very ready for this decision,” Halevi said during an assessment with military officials and Fire Commissioner Eyal Caspi, at an army base in Kiryat Shmona.

“We have been attacking for eight months, and Hezbollah is paying a very, very high price. It has increased its strengths in recent days and we are prepared after a very good process of training… to move to an attack in the north,” he said.

“[We have] strong defense, readiness to attack, [and] we are approaching a decision point,” he added.

Halevi and Caspi later met with firefighters who worked to extinguish large blazes in northern Israel over the past two days, some of which were sparked by Hezbollah rocket and drone attacks.

The war cabinet met on Tuesday night to discuss the latest developments along the border with Lebanon amid criticism of the government for failing to bring security to the region after long months of conflict.

Amid the clashes, a military reservist was moderately wounded by shrapnel from an interceptor missile launched over the northern city of Safed earlier Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces said, adding that it launched the interceptor after identifying a “suspicious aerial target” in the north. It was later revealed to have been a false alarm.

The interceptor shrapnel also sparked a fire in Biriya Forest near Safed. By the afternoon, 10 firefighting teams, along with a firefighting plane, were working to extinguish the fire, according to Fire and Rescue services. The Merom Hagalil Regional Council said earlier that the blaze did not pose a threat to nearby communities.

Firefighters were also battling to control a blaze at Keren Naftali, while fires in Kiryat Shmona, Manara and Kfar Giladi, caused by the Hezbollah projectiles, were under control.

Separately, a “suspicious aerial target” that was heading toward Israel from Lebanon was shot down by air defenses over the sea, near Nahariya, the IDF added.

No sirens sounded in the incident.

There is no choice. It will be painful but Israel will have to do what the Lebanese government cannot do. Neither of them want Hezbullah but only one will fight them.

They have not learned they have to stop talking and telegraphing what they are thinking rather than just doing it. If they had moved full out on Rafah it would be done. Now that window is closed.

wipe out Hezaballan, Hamas, Fatah/PLO/Abbas and all the rest of the savages Occupying and/or threatening your land.

Any other nation would have done this years ago.

It is the first responsibility of government to guard the country and assure safety for its citizens.

Stop being so damned “humanitarian” — it avails you naught, actually it enables your sworn enemies while also enboldening them (they see all the free food, medical care, and everything you give them as a sure sign of weakness)

The window is not closed. They act the way they think they should and not carpet bomb civilians. Plus, they made the choice to push all the civilians south first, to clear north Gaza. Now they have to push them east and north to clear the south while they clean up Rafah. Which they are doing. My guess is they won’t agree to complete withdrawal they will want to keep the border with Egypt and some tactical strike positions.

I don’t know if they are telegraphing to Hezbullah per se. I see this more as a warning. Gaza ops will wrap up soon, and then a militarized and angry Israeli populace won’t put up with continued attacks from Lebanon. Might as well get it all cleaned up if they are on a war footing. And they will bomb the heck out of Southern Lebanon. Nothing compared to Gaza.

Reminded me of “If you’re going to shoot, shoot. Don’t talk.”
I expect the displaced families want a decisive victory too.

The last time israel invaded lebanon in 2006 they got their ass handed to them by hezbolla. Israel lost quite a lot of their merkava tanks. They were vulnerable to atgm’s fired from hidden positions. Now they will also have to deal with drones. Israel has been fighting in gaza since october without achieving it’s stated goals. As long as hamas terrorist leaders have sanctuaries outside Israel, and can field a dozen fighters they are not defeated. That’s how guerilla war works.. Also it would appear they’re not getting live hostages back; they’ve been killed by airstrikes or murdered by hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ...

So guess who was in charge of that war, and guess who is on the other side of this war. Shameful.

OLMERT: Yeah. Well, I actually suggested to the Israeli public to go to the streets in order to help remove the Israeli government not only because of Rafah, a possible Rafah invasion, but because of the entire performance of this government for a long time, starting even before October, but certainly and particularly after October.

Ehud Olmert, Ehud Barak, and lesser known Aharon Barak, along with Esther Hayut and Gali Baharav-Miara should have been held incommunicado awaiting trial on Oct. 8.

Then Haliva, Bar, Finkelman and Gallant soon after. What did Gallant do to help Ofakim when the mayor there called Gallant twice?
