Texas House runoffs bring wave of GOP incumbent defeats, give Abbott votes for school vouchers

A wave of Republican incumbents were swept out of the Texas House in Tuesday's primary runoffs, including a handful who opposed school vouchers last fall, handing Gov. Greg Abbott a tentative majority in the lower chamber on his signature issue.

With most ballots counted across the state, six of the eight GOP House members who were forced into overtime appeared to lose their runoffs, continuing a surge of anti-establishment energy that had already led to the ouster of nine House Republicans in the March primary.

The runoffs brought mixed results for Texas' hard right: the House gained a pro-voucher majority — for now — and the 15 GOP incumbents ousted by insurgent challengers across both rounds of the primary amounted to a record. But House Speaker Dade Phelan, the top target of the party's rightmost faction, survived his runoff, setting the stage for a period of major turbulence and uncertainty for the lower chamber as it shifts even further right.

As the runoff results took shape, Abbott declared that the House "now has enough votes to pass school choice," the term used by voucher supporters to describe measures that provide taxpayer funds for private school tuition.

15 out of 86 Republican legislators are being removed and replaced.

That's 17%.

“That’s 17%.”

I’ll take the 17% and shoot for another 83% next election cycle.

Passing School Choice is a big deal. We have it here in North Carolina and Ron DeSantis & the Republican majority in both houses pushed it through in Florida. We need as many red states as possible to defund the Leftist Teachers’ union and radically slash their ability to indoctrinate the next generation with their Leftist worldview.

I always taunt them by saying I’m pro choice. You ARE pro choice aren’t you??? This beautifully puts them in the position of having to be anti choice - contrary to everything they’ve been saying for 50 years.

Good for you. You’re absolutely right. Public schools are a 60 year pox that needs immediate eradication.

Some vote against it because the school districts themselves are opposed and lobby hard against it.

But a lot of homeschoolers and private schools are opposed too, because the voucher laws are often written to give either the state or the school districts control over anyone who uses a voucher. And you may not have a choice in the matter.

You take government money, the government gets to tell you to have drag queen story hour as part of your school day.

Quite right. This site is better for Texas issues, from a non-leftist perspective:

Two years ago we set up education accounts per kid to be used ANYWHERE, including homeschooling.

The result? The top 10 schools in the state were charter schools; homeschooling flourished; and public schools began to see a much needed enrollment decline.

Oh, and the teachers’ unions whined.

*It also potentially puts Dade Phelan out of the Speaker’s Chair*

Then take him out in November. We can afford it for one term.
