Native American Groups Allege Met Museum’s Curator Is ‘Pretendian’

Native American campaigners are raising questions about the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s first-ever curator of Native American art — claiming she does not belong to a federally recognized tribe in the US, The Post has learned.
Patricia Marroquin Norby was hired with great fanfare in 2020, after what the museum said was “a long and competitive search,” as its “inaugural Associate Curator of Native American Art” in its American Wing. For years, Marroquin Norby, 53, described herself — including in legal filings — as “Apache,” “Eastern Apache” and “Nde” as well as “Purepacha/Tarascan,” an indigenous group from the northwestern part of Michoacan, Mexico.
A year after her appointment, the New York Times described her as “the museum’s first Native American curator and its first curator of Native American art” in a glowing profile.

Evidently someone in hiring failed to give him a DNA test before making their hiring decision.

I don’t know about popular but when you family has been here 2 or 3 or 4 hundred years there is some mixing.

Maybe she is a "pretendian" but there are a lot of people with indian ancestry who are not registered with a recognized tribe.
Most people in Mexico have some Indian genetics in them.

I find it hilarious when Indians accuse others of being racist. This includes both American and Asian varieties. Total hypocrisy. Absolutely. Indians have a caste system and still dare to call others racist.

Our granddaughter is one/third Native American based upon her DNA test.

It is also amusing when they run to the defense of illegal immigration by posting memes about white settlers as illegal immigranuts.
Obviously if they are OK with illegal immigration now, they learned nothing from the past.

There was a man in Tahlequah, OK a few years back. He was an Indian. Hell, anyone with a set of eyes could see it in him and his family.
He sold his art as Indian art.
He did not have a roll number. There are a lot of Cherokees that would not sign their names in the Dawes Books.
Any way the tribe sued him to stop selling his art as Indian art.
It was odd seeing a tribal chief that looked about as much an Indian as Elizabeth Warren on the news saying this man could not sell Indian art.
Quite a few roll number Indians in Oklahoma.

My grandma raised my mother and two sisters as a single mom in the 50’s. They lived in the ghetto and the girls never met their father. Granny told me he was a Canadian French/Indian so maybe I can claim indigenous??? That’d be awesome, seeing that I and my daughter both have the high cheekbones to back up my claim...
It works that way, right?

You should see the so called Indians in Connecticut who run the casino industry, they are from a tribe yes but that tribe had it's origins in sub Sahara Africa. DNA would tell the Tale but these phoneys would never submit to a test. Big time scam artists.

The Asians who crossed over thousands of years ago displaced and pushed out earlier settlers. Fact. Very early settlements in Alaska were being investigated and found to have Caucasian DNA. The tribes currently occupying the area threw the researchers out when this was discovered.

I have a close relative who has fantasized over a possible American Indian ancestory—despite no evidence of it.
Claiming Indian heritage has been an American scam for decades. As far as a I know, none of the tribes accept DNA evidence. To claim ancestry, you have the show the lineage and the paperwork, which includes birth and marriage certificates, and a tribal board has to approve the submission. Most people who claim American Indian heritage can't produce the evidence.
