Catholic diocesan hermit approved by Kentucky bishop comes out as transgender

(RNS) — Diocesan hermits by nature don’t get much attention. A small subset of religious persons, hermits mostly spend their lives engaged in quiet prayer.

Brother Christian Matson, a Catholic diocesan hermit in Kentucky, has spent years doing just that. His monk’s habit might catch his neighbor’s eye, but he is known in the town where he lives primarily through his work with the local theater.

But recently Matson decided that his faith compels him to make a little more noise than usual.

“This Sunday, Pentecost 2024, I’m planning to come out publicly as transgender,” Matson told Religion News Service on Friday (May 17), saying he was speaking out with the permission of his bishop, John Stowe of the Diocese of Lexington in Kentucky.

Could someone (preferably traditional Roman Catholic) please explain exactly what a "diocesan hermit" is. Also how does one become one?

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who never heard of that before.

I wonder what he has been praying about? “Please give me some pretty, pretty clothes for my hermitage.”

They live a more traditional cloistered life of poverty and prayer.

This, however, tells me that the process of becoming a monk has been corrupted. This crap doesn’t happen to true believers. I believe the psycho leftists are invading every facet of life including the deepest parts of Christianity. The Buddhists wouldn’t stand for this dumpster fire.

Ditto. I'm pretty sure it's just one of their numerous religious "orders" (denominations.)

IThe article says a hermit is a relatively quiet and secluded type of vocation. It sounds to me like this person is neither being quiet or secluded. So that means it’s just another political stunt.

Agree with comments below, a hermit doesn’t participate in theatre. In fact, they often never leave their homes.

His theatrical work is so bad no one wants to see it! So effectively he’s a hermit.

I think it is conceivable that someone with the kind of disorder that gender dysphoria is could still attempt a chaste life of prayer as a hermit. (I do not see how involvement with a local theatre is compatible.)

There are online resources for Catholic and other hermits. But there's an important distinction between disorders and sins. It's not a sin to be homosexually inclined; it's a disorder. It's homosexual ACTS which are the sin. I think gender dysphoria is similar.

A man can’t become a woman and a woman can’t become a man, but I don’t know which way this person is pretending.

Theravada Buddhism, particularly in Southeast Asia, has traditionally adhered to binary gender roles and segregation of monks based on biological sex at birth. The Thai Sangha Council has attempted to ban ordinations of transgender people. However, Mahayana and Vajrayana schools have been more accommodating. The Jodo Shinshu sect has ordained transgender monks in Japan and North America. In Tibetan Buddhism, some teachers have refrained from asking about gender identity during ordination. Many Buddhist denominations in the West are intentionally inclusive of transgender people in their sanghas (communities). Classical Buddhist teachings viewed gender as fluid, with stories of individuals changing gender across lifetimes or within the same life due to karma. This was not seen as a hindrance to spiritual progress.

I always thought a hermit was someone who lives in complete solitude and doesn’t interact with mere humans.

Since a hermit doesn’t talk to any human, it is impossible for him/her/it to reveal that he/she/it is really it/she/he. Like, who would care? He/she/it wears a robe all year around and doesn’t talk to anybody. How does she/it/he “come out”?

From the article: ...through his work with the local theater.

...where he honed playing the role of a monk.

Wow, an LGBTQ Tranny Diocesan Thespian Hermit?

Is he/she also a minority, obese or disabled ?

If so, we could be watching history in the making

Folks, we have hit Peak Intersectionality!

Totally historic. Who would have thought that it's possible for hermit to consign Karine Jean-Pierre to the dust bin of Lefty history.

Exactly, he’s not a Hermit if he is an activist. If he’s a Hermit, he’s doing a poor job of t.

Substitute “fake” for “trans” and you’ll have your answer. This has helped me
Enormously. A trans man is a fake man.
