That would have to require a gps with mapping software built into every car.

How long before that data is sent to the state to bill you for every mile driven?

The systems I've seen use mapping, GPS, and cameras to read posted signs.

A similar device was on some cars built back in the 50s or 60s as I recall. The driver would set it & it would present a visual signal if you were exceeding that speed. It was for personal information to the driver only. No need to involve the government as they are already too much involved in your personal business. I can think of an instance where a device that actually caused the vehicle not to exceed a set speed could cause a fatal accident. It seems that there are certain people who should have no involvement in the automotive business.

Huh? Most Modern cars built within the last 10 years already know what the posted speed limit is and indicates it on the instrument panel.

You're missing the real opportunity. Many cars have logging monitors built in. Add GPS, a mapping database and a cellular modem and your bad driving behavior (speeding, hard stops, too fast turns) gets reported back to your car insurance carrier. The legal infractions get reported to law enforcement. Distance driven becomes a source of revenue as a vehicle mileage tax.

No. An app on your phone has GPS and mapping software care of Google maps. Not necessary to be part of the car. Your insurance carrier can offer a deal for lower premiums if you just agree to put the app on your phone to tattle on your driving behavior.

Every new car I’ve seen has a gps feature, even if you don’t see it as the driver. Just because you don’t pay OnStar or some similar program doesn’t mean the equipment isn’t in the car.

“That would have to require a gps with mapping software built into every car.”

It can be done with cameras.

The company I work for installed nanny cams in all the company vehicles. If you go more than 10mph over the speed limit, the stupid mother-in-law on the windshield starts bitching “Please slow down”. Someone cuts you off, and the stupid mother-in-law bitches “Maintain safe distance”. If you rub your nose, eye, ear, check your mirrors, etc, the stupid mother-in-law bitches “Distracted driving”.🙄
