War and popularity keep Zelensky in power despite term expiring
BBC News ^ | 20 May 2024 | James Waterhouse

“He’s doomed to not be loved!”

Never was there a more clear-cut case of “commentator’s curse” than when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was inaugurated on a sunny Kyiv day exactly five years ago.

The TV narrator’s inference was that, after a landslide election victory with 73% of the vote, it could only go downhill for him.

While his approval ratings have inevitably waned, Volodymyr Zelensky has been able to use his enduring appeal, along with a desire for stability, to extend his term in office.

In peacetime it would have expired, and an election would have been called. But the martial law brought in with Russia’s full-scale invasion means that can’t happen, and there’s broad public support for that too.

“For the Ukrainians, the priority is to win the war and then have an election,” explains Anton Hrushetskyi, the head of Kyiv’s International Institute of Sociology.

“Therefore, they don’t question the legitimacy of Zelensky.”

Moscow, unsurprisingly, has done just that. But it would also jump on a mid-war election where Ukraine’s wartime leader would be heavily scrutinised.

“We see these narratives from Russia and how it tries to impose on Western minds the thought that Ukraine is not a democracy,” explains Anton.

Give me a break.

He’s our puppet.

We put him in power in the first place.

Now we want him to stick around, so he will.

So, they’re their own worst enemy? ;)

If he was all that popular, he would’ve had an election. What a fake. Lol

As usual, you, Blinken, and the other incompetents badly miscalculated in Ukraine. By cancelling elections, too many Ukrainians will see Z as illegitimate, despite your own assurances that he's legitimate and as popular as ever.

Wasn’t one of the arguments given for this war “democracy?”

The guy banned all real opposition parties.

Jails journalists that dare write the wrong things.

Shuts down radio stations that dare air the wrong things.

They mass censor the Internet.

Had opposition leaders killed 14 - 16 of them as of last year (with plausible deniability of course).

The guy banned Ham radio since someone might get the wrong ideas by being able to hear something other than the state sponsored message, or broadcast things that the state don’t want (hard to control Ham radio).

And now, he’s officially a dictator since he canceled the elections, but that won’t stop us from trying to even spin that somehow.

Isn’t it time to make him person of the year again?: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/713B-OtyGUL.jpg

“While his approval ratings have inevitably waned“ Ya think?!?
This bloodthirsty Quisling has outlawed all opposition political parties, oppo press, represses the Orthodox Church as effectively as the commies and his brutal press gangs grab any swinging for the meat grinder. His DC whoring has cost 500,000 Uke soldiers, the economy imploded long ago, half the population is now dead, hideously injured, have fled the country or are now officially Russian and his popularity “inevitably” waned a little. I don’t think it was mentioned that in a couple of hours this joker is no longer the legit head of state. Remember, he cancelled elections. As of tomorrow he is a common criminal civilian with a very large price on his head.

"He’s ensuring that not a single Yook male will still be alive, and that’s a good thing!"

He's ensuring that not a single Yook male will still be alive to vote when elections are allowed again.

Well. the article is full of BS. The reality as to why there is no election being held is:

The Ukrainian constitution and laws governing the conduct of war effectively bar the country from holding elections during martial law, which was imposed at the start of Russia’s aggression in February 2022. Additionally, the Law of Ukraine “On the Legal Regime of Martial Law” explicitly prohibits holding national and local elections during a state of war.

The Constitution indirectly prohibits elections from being held when the country is under martial law – which is currently in force. The law would therefore have to be amended to respect these electoral deadlines

FDR had elections during the war. Or is that what you were referring to?

Interesting coincidence. Over in General/Chat in the New York Times Time Machine threads Grant’s Overland Campaign is in full swing. The relevance? Grant ground down the AoNV in an attritional campaign, just like the Russians are doing now. Like the CSA then, unless the Great Powers intervene, Ukraine is going to lose.

I suspect it’s up to the Russian government how long Zelensky stays in power as it seems to me that now that he’s a civilian, he won’t be getting the ‘protection’ he had gotten from Russia as a head of state.

...but we’ll see.

Whatever U.S. Elites Are Defending In Ukraine, It Isn’t Democracy

BY: JOHN DANIEL DAVIDSON
MAY 16, 2024

Excerpt:

“It’s getting harder and harder to pretend the war in Ukraine, now in its third year, is about “defending democracy,” as our political elites in Washington insist.

This is especially true when Secretary of State Antony Blinken shows up in Ukraine to deliver billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund the war, proclaims that Ukraine’s scheduled presidential elections this spring are canceled until “conditions allow” (Ukraine has not held elections since 2019), and then jaunts off to a popular Kyiv nightclub to play a boomerish cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.”
