Winterer is a former Douglas County Nebraska Republican Party Chairman opining/complaining about how the Nebraska Republican Party was taken over by the "MAGA" crowd, and the results. To me (I'm not from Nebraska) this is emblematic of how the GOPe thinks.

The rise of the MAGA movement has resulted in the party endorsing candidates who are challenging the party’s incumbents.

The MAGA 'movement', as such, started as a slogan. It gained momentum as Americans with more than two brain cells could see WHO is destroying this nation and HOW they are destroying it. Career politicians...from both parties need to be removed and people who want America to be great again are at the core.

Treat the cause...not the symptoms.

I went through the 70s as a young, stupid McGovern liberal. I saw on the ground floor the takeover of the Democrat party by the far left from the center left, turning the Democrat party of my GI parents into the Marxist party of the anti-war anti-industry anti-morality hippie Boomers. I’d like to think the same mirror-image thing is happening in the GOP, but there will be a lot more howling and a lot more nasty politics before the takeover is anywhere near complete.

It’s more like a movement, akin to what “Solidarity” in Poland was in the 1980s.

“The party’s endorsed candidates have no hope of being elected, which flies in the face of the party’s fundamental purpose.”

The Republican Party was founded in 1854 to combat the expansion of slavery into the Kansas and Nebraska territories. It was born on the ashes of the Whig Party which had splintered due to its unwillingness to oppose the expansion of slavery. Not unlike the refusal of the Republican establishment to oppose open borders today.

Winterer claims the MAGA party candidates have no chance of being elected. Two years after its founding the new Republican Party ran John C Fremont for President in the 1856 election. Fremont lost but the new party showed strength in some states. In 1858 an aspiring Republican politician, Abraham Lincoln, ran for US Senator in Illinois against the incumbent Stephen Douglas, a Democrat. Lincoln lost the election but gained national awareness through a series of debates he and Douglas participated in. In 1860, the loser Lincoln from the new party with no chance of winning was elected President of the United States and changed the history of the nation.

Winterer is apparently not a student of history. The history of mankind is filled with examples of people and organizations that tried, failed, tired again, failed, and finally succeeded. In 1776 Winterer would have declared it impossible to fight the British Empire. In 1860 he would have declared a Lincoln victory impossible.

If Mr. Winterer is so perceptive, why was there not a President Dole, President McCain, President Romney, or President Jeb Bush?

OK..
Here in michiganstan, we threw out the bush league chamber of commerce worshiping republCAN’Ts.
There defeat at the convention was so bad and resounding that the big money donors took their cash and their toys and went home.
They literally walked out of the convention!!!
We then primaried them, and did not vote for the ones that made it though the primaries.
We got dem control, but only for 2 years.
Or so we thought.
The big money hired lawyers and sued to regain control of their party.
They won.
Our hard earned party was literally taken from us by the courts!!!
The pubs are dead to me.
Time for MAGA!!!!!

One of the main reasons for the rise of the “MAGA” party is the deterioration of the GOP Party, inaction of GOP candidates and elected officials, and the breakdown of the local committee systems.

All due to the GOP letting down their “base”.

Well. the problem is that this man does not realize that the base disagrees with the party. Thus we had two choices, to create a third part which never works, or we work to change the party. He is more than welcome to go start a new party if he has become disenfranchised with how the party is changing, or he can change with it. At least we are giving him the same options we had.

Our complaining about them had a long history of being a waste of time, so we took action. Time for him to take his ill-gotten wealth and run to a safe-haven that no longer exists, thanks to what they have allowed this nation to descend into.

That's his real beef. He is experiencing what we have been experiencing for decades, and now he doesn't like it because it no longer benefits him.

It's an awful feeling isn't it. Perhaps you should have paid attention to the base, and found some fighters, instead of appeasers who consistently went along to get along, while leaving us behind

You're lucky we were so passive for so long, but that time is now gone. Time now for you to change or move along. Because we are prepared to fight where you never were. Bye-Bye now.

The article is whiny drivel. If the MAGA candidates can’t win, then what does this GOPe apologist have to worry about. If the MAGA candidate can win, then there is nothing “undemocratic” about it. Lastly, if GOPe members refuse to vote for MAGA candidates, then who is holding who hostage?

The reason the MAGA movement campaigns against incumbents in the Republican party is because by and large, those incumbents SUCK at their job as opposition to the left.

At best, they grovel hat-in-hand, begging the leftists for just a morsel of what conservatives actually want. At worse, they outright side with the leftoids against their own constituents and throw us under the bus.

For most of my voting life, the Republicans have promised the moon but sold us down the river when it actually counts. I, for one, have grown weary licking boot. Therefore, I fully support MAGA.

20+ years ago I would have agreed with this guy. The problem is that the Republican Party has been dominated by feckless frauds who have made careers out of betraying their supporters repeatedly.

This guy is really late to the game if he thinks the Republican Party doesn’t exist anymore. It hasn’t existed since at least 2003, as far as I’m concerned. Apparently he has no idea how much damage was done to his party’s brand by duplicitous @assholes like the Bush and Cheney families, John McCain, John Boner, Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney, etc.
