The education board for a rural Virginia county voted early on Friday to restore the names of Confederate generals stripped from two schools in 2020, making the mostly white, Republican district the first in the U.S. to take such an action.
By a 5-1 vote, the Shenandoah County board overturned its 2020 decision that stripped a public high school and elementary school of their original names honoring three military leaders of the pro-slavery South in the Civil War.
Under the board's action, Mountain View High School will again become known as Stonewall Jackson High, while Honey Run Elementary School will revert to the name Ashby Lee Elementary.
The names belong to some of the most well-known military leaders of the Confederacy. Robert E. Lee was commander of the Army of Northern Virginia; Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was a Confederate infantry general, and Turner Ashby was a rebel cavalry commander. All of them were Virginians.

Good. History of our civilization.
‘Bout effin time someone stood up to the wokeness! May I have some more, please?!!!!
Not good to honor either slavers or black radical favorites like Trayvon Martin. There are plenty of patriotic, freedom- loving-for-all Americans whose names could have been used.

No bias here! Interesting that they don't mention they were all Democrats...
We Texans want Fort Hood restored.
Boo hoo. I suggest you buy some pearls to clutch.
I agree, and in general I don’t think school boards should be spending time and money on this.
“Making the mostly Nazi population the first in the state to do so.”
Give me a freaking break from this yellow journalism.
These were 3 of the best generals fighting to preserve their ideas of the Republic. Lee himself spent the years after the civil war trying to reunify the country.
Given where the district resides, the schools are named after three people who did a good deal to keep what were perceived as invaders at bay, at least one of whom can be considered a local boy who made good.
Ashby is an interesting person—he held that the raid on Harper’s Ferry marked the beginning of the civil war, and while he opposed session, opposition meant he thought that it was imprudent—not that it absolved him of his duty to his state and fellow Virginians. Some Yankees lit a fire in his belly by bayonetting his brother while he brother was attempting to surrender.
He also sounds like he would have fit better with Forrest than Jackson, under whom he actually served.

They fought against the Republic of the United States. Lee deserves honor for the way he surrendered and you are right, he worked to reunify the Country.
Hpw about also honoring the brave Texans who stayed loyal to the US.
Good for them!
But your comment suggests you don’t understand the low IQ in political correctness.
They can start by having their illegal Mexican labor movement to put back all the Texas Ranger statues and memorials the breakfast tacos were made to tear down by corrupt gringos.
Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. Jackson were among the most honorable Americans ever.
