London -- A team of scientists from the world’s leading universities have developed a new all-in-one vaccine that they hope can protect humans against a broad range of coronaviruses, including ones that are yet to emerge.
The research published in ‘Nature Nanotechnology’ on Monday is based on a new approach to vaccine development called “proactive vaccinology”, where scientists build a vaccine before the disease-causing pathogen even emerges, which has shown promising results in mice.
The study by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge in the UK and Caltech in the US says the vaccine works by training the body’s immune system to recognise specific regions of eight different coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2 which caused the COVID-19 outbreak, and several that are currently circulating in bats and have potential to jump to humans and cause a pandemic. “Our focus is to create a vaccine that will protect us against the next coronavirus pandemic, and have it ready before the pandemic has even started,” said Rory Hills, a graduate researcher in the University of Cambridge’s Department of Pharmacology and first author of the report.
For example, the new vaccine does not include the SARS-CoV-1 coronavirus, which caused the 2003 SARS outbreak, yet it still induces an immune response to that virus. “We’ve created a vaccine that provides protection against a broad range of different coronaviruses – including ones we don’t even know about yet,” said Hills.
Key to its effectiveness is that the specific virus regions the vaccine targets also appear in many related coronaviruses. By training the immune system to attack these regions, it gives protection against other coronaviruses not represented in the vaccine, including ones that haven’t even been identified yet.
“We don’t have to wait for new coronaviruses to emerge. We know enough about coronaviruses, and different immune responses to them, that we can get going with building protective vaccines against unknown coronaviruses now,” said Professor Mark Howarth in the University of Cambridge’s Department of Pharmacology, senior author of the report.
“Scientists did a great job in quickly producing an extremely effective COVID vaccine during the last pandemic, but the world still had a massive crisis with a huge number of deaths. We need to work out how we can do even better than that in the future, and a powerful component of that is starting to build the vaccines in advance,” he said.
The new ‘Quartet Nanocage’ vaccine is based on a structure called a nanoparticle – a ball of proteins held together by incredibly strong interactions. Chains of different viral antigens are attached to this nanoparticle using a novel “protein superglue”. Multiple antigens are included in these chains, which trains the immune system to target specific regions shared across a broad range of coronaviruses. The latest study demonstrated that the new vaccine raises a broad immune response, even in mice that were pre-immunised with SARS-CoV-2. The new vaccine is much simpler in design than other broadly protective vaccines currently in development, which the researchers believe should accelerate its route into clinical trials.
The underlying technology that the scientific collaboration has developed also has potential for use in vaccine development to protect against many other health challenges. It is said to improve on previous work, by the Oxford and Caltech groups, to develop a novel all-in-one vaccine against coronavirus threats.
According to experts, conventional vaccines include a single antigen to train the immune system to target a single specific virus, which may not protect against a diverse range of existing coronaviruses or against pathogens that are newly emerging.
The latest research was funded by the UK’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
The last vaccine is an inoculation against the desire to EVER trust vaccine makers again!
Probably a little bit of everything.
A dash of this and a spike of that.
Ahh ok, you first.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
They invented a sort of drug for a disease that does not exist yet. Brilliant!
Oh, and my insurance better pay for it. I'll bet it will be expensive.
Sure...you take it.
““Scientists did a great job in quickly producing an extremely effective COVID vaccine during the last pandemic, but the world still had a massive crisis with a huge number of deaths.”
In reality they created the pandemic they were trying to prevent. The ultimate “stupid virology trick”.
Flu is an adenovirus
I will no longer take injections with the exception of anesthesia and infusion. I don’t even take a flu shot anymore. Would rather get the flu and be done with it. I don’t trust the government. Plain and simple.
So a vaccine that can mutate on its own to protect against a a coronavirus disease that hasn’t itself mutated yet.
Think about that! What else can it mutate against? Your immune system, organs etc.
Guess if you’re dead you won’t catch any other diseases.
Medical “science” has lost all credibility. Need to end the CDC, WHO and most of these “university” programs and start over. The so called scientist have been corrupted or better yet infected.
Come up with a vaccine to end liberalism and stupidity.
Really? I’ll be standing in line this morning to get that sucker! Not.
Seriously? You just said that? Good Lord, leftists are unable to deal in reality.
It is NOT just the flu. Ask our friend TheWriterTX.
This was a nasty virus circa early 2020. It mutated to a less deadly variety, but I have friends who STILL haven’t got back their taste or smell. That never happened with the flu. A number of people who got it in my circle breezed through their illness, while others really struggled. It barely scratched people under 20 but it was awful in general for the elderly and compromised.
Why it’s almost as if it was manufactured to hit everyone differently.
We can’t have it both ways….if it’s the flu then it’s not a bio weapon. This thing was not a boating accident.
The shot to prevent Covid stopped being effective after the first mutation AND after about 180 days. That set up the populace for perennial boosters - something that was NEVER subjected to clinical trials.
I don’t subscribe to the “all the vaxxed will be dead in 5 years” hysterical, climate change-like doom fantasy. But I DO believe these shots weren’t properly tested (an 12-week trial isn’t the standard for vaccines- it’s more like 9 years) and the planet is essentially undergoing an unmonitored clinical trial for this shot.
The only “good” thing coming from this pandemic, is that a large swath of the citizenry have broken free from the shackles of Authority Bias. Virologists, “experts,” the media, social media outlets, and now AI evangelists are laughed at, ignored, mocked, and made into memes. I don’t believe this intelligencia has realized they’ve been pantsed, in part because they’re still getting narcissistic supply from their leftist fans. But Deplorables and a bigly number of centrists basically change the channel when their ugly mugs come across the transom, with the more industrious folks making these mugs into funny memes for our dining and dancing pleasure.
I hear the main ingredient is potassium cyanide - much more effective than the current jabs.....
No thanks, just HELL NO.
Fool me once,,,,
Thanks for the thoughtful articulate post, Bob.
>> It is NOT just the flu.
Agree it was somewhat worse, “back then”. But now, “it’s just the flu”. I am right now recovering from a viral infection that may very well be a COVID variant of a variant of a variant — so in my recent experience, actually “it’s just a bad cold plus a couple days of 101 fever”. I’m unvaxxed and avoid medicines of all kinds including over the counter, so during this six day episode so far I’ve had 2 ibuprofen for a headache and that’s it. My immune system is doing the job it was created to do, to GOD be the glory.
>> We can’t have it both ways….if it’s the flu then it’s not a bio weapon.
There is common sense in what you say. In my opinion it was deliberately engineered in a lab as a weapon or a weapon precursor, but it was accidentally released from the lab at the “not quite a bioweapon” stage.
>> The shot to prevent Covid stopped being effective after the first mutation AND after about 180 days. That set up the populace for perennial boosters - something that was NEVER subjected to clinical trials.
Makes sense to me.
>> I don’t subscribe to the “all the vaxxed will be dead in 5 years” ... doom fantasy
Neither do I. Nor do I subscribe to the “my vaxxed friend Jane’s niece miscarried/got a detached retina/lost her purse... IT HAD TO BE THE VACCINE!!!” stuff I frequently hear from the Queen here in the castle. But hyperbole notwithstanding, the vax has caused so many health problems already, and so many more going forward, that quite likely its bad side effects outweigh its benefits already received. And I think the benefits train already left the station and there ain’t no more bennies coming from the vaxxes.
>> the planet is essentially undergoing an unmonitored clinical trial for this shot.
Yes, and Amen
>> The only “good” thing coming from this pandemic, is that a large swath of the citizenry have broken free from the shackles of Authority Bias. &etc
YES, AND AMEN! Well said.
FRegards
My late husband was so funny in a dry, quirky, sarcastic way. He would listen to all the side effects at the end of medicine commercials and then quietly add “ and.... your dick will fall off”. ps. he refused to take the vaccine even when they tried to force it on him for hospice care.
