This is The End of Kristie Noem Even if Trump Picks Her
Hotair ^ | 04/27/2024 | Jazz Shaw

I have been an admirer of South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem ever since she first showed up on my radar after her election in 2019. She has established a solid record as a conservative with ambitious policy goals that have served her state very well and she's an excellent communicator. She's been well up on my list of potential Trump veepstakes picks because she brings a lot to the table. But all of that came crashing down for me yesterday evening when The Guardian published a review of her upcoming book, "No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward." It sounds as if most of the book is a fairly typical political analysis of the dangers of rampant progressivism and the need to restore traditional American values. But it also contains one highly disturbing episode from her life when she killed one of her own dogs, a German wirehaired pointer named Cricket who was only 14 months old. Her description of the incident is rather horrifying and I fear it speaks poorly of her character. (Warning: Potentially disturbing content ahead.)

In 2012, as the Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney was pilloried for tying a dog, Seamus, to the roof of the family car for a cross-country trip.

But in 2024 Kristi Noem, a strong contender to be named running mate to Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, has managed to go one further – by admitting killing a dog of her own.

“Cricket was a wirehair pointer, about 14 months old,” the South Dakota governor writes in a new book, adding that the dog, a female, had an “aggressive personality” and needed to be trained to be used for hunting pheasant.

What unfolds over the next few pages shows how that effort went very wrong indeed – and, remarkably, how Cricket was not the only domestic animal Noem chose to kill one day in hunting season.

Noem describes attempting to train Cricket to hunt pheasant and the dog's failure to adapt to typical hunting procedures. Rather than locating game and "pointing" (hence the breed name) at birds so the hunter can take them, Cricket would "go out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life”. It sounds as if Cricket wasn't well-suited to be a hunting dog, but was certainly very happy. Noem even described Cricket as "the picture of pure joy."

Despite all of that, she took the dog out to a gravel pit and shot her with a rifle. She later returned and did the same to a goat. She reports that the uncastrated goat was "nasty and mean." Having worked summer jobs on family farms growing up, I can assure you that uncastrated male goats kept for breeding are aggressive and territorial. It's just their nature.

In a way, I suppose I can understand why Noem would choose to share this story. She's trying to make the point that she is "willing to do anything, difficult, messy, and ugly if it simply needs to be done." That can be true at times in politics to be sure, but as a leader, character also counts for a lot. As I've written here before, my wife and I first met volunteering at an animal shelter. Dogs mean a lot to us and we've had many over the decades we've been together. If you have a dog that you're raising for hunting and it doesn't work out, you can find a new home for the dog, particularly when it is so young and "the picture of pure joy."

Even if you can't manage to find a new home yourself, you could take the dog to a shelter. If all else fails, you might feel you have no other choice, but you should euthanize the dog humanely. We've had to take too many of our dogs to be put to sleep but they were all suffering from extreme old age and/or painful, untreatable diseases. (We probably could have paid off our house five years earlier with all the money we've spent on veterinary bills.) If the Noem family was operating a farm, they obviously knew and had access to a veterinarian. It's a requirement for such an operation. You don't just drag the dog to a gravel pit and shoot it.

In the book, Noem writes, “I guess if I were a better politician I wouldn’t tell the story here.” The Guardian correctly describes that passage as possibly being "the greatest understatement of election year." I agree. I wish I hadn't learned this about her.

To be clear, this doesn't take away from Noem's commendable performance as the Governor of South Dakota. And if Donald Trump does wind up picking her to be his running mate, I won't hold it against him or fail to vote for him. (We vote for presidents, not vice presidents.) But if she were to move forward and run for national office on her own, I would be forced to find a third-party candidate to vote for. As I said above, character is also important in leaders. I could not, in good conscience, vote for Kristi Noem. That's how important this is to me.

I’ve had to put down an aggressive dog. He was the runt of a litter I rescued from a ditch a few miles from my home.

They are/were pitbull/black lab mixes, and I still have the only girl of the litter. She’s mouthy (barks at EVERYTHING), scared to death of thunder and lightning, but is the sweetest pup.

The one I had to put down attacked a friend of my daughters who was visiting, biting at the tires of her car even. Then he attacked my elderly dad, and finally a week later, attacked me. That was it. I’ll give a dog a second, even third chance. But, that’s it. He was being more aggressive (and weighing in at 80 lbs or more, was a menace) as he got older.

Poor fella.

Was that really the best you could add to this thread?

With a stupid comment like that, why are you even on this site?

You sound more like a 12 year old who has just discovered the internet and its forums......

Just a dog.
From time to time people tell me “chill out, it’s just a dog” or “it’s a lot of money just for a dog.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time invested, or the costs incurred by “just a dog”.
Some of my proudest moments have occurred with “just a dog.”
Many hours have passed being my only company “just a dog”, but not for one moment did I feel despised. Some of my saddest moments have been because of “just a dog,” and on those gray days, the gentle touch of “just a Dog” gave me comfort and the reason to get through the day.
If you also think “it’s just a dog”, then you’ll probably understand phrases like “just a friend”, “just a sunrise” or “just a promise.” “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust and pure unbridled joy. “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.
For “just a dog” I will get up early, take long walks and look forward to the future. So for me and people like me, it’s not “just a dog,” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the memories of the past, and the absolute joy of the moment. “Just a dog” brings out the good in me and takes my thoughts away from myself and daily worries.
I hope one day they can understand that it’s not “just a dog”, but the one that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a human.” So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog”, just smile because they “just don’t get it”.

From my latest book:

Rupert certainly had a rough day. His faithful dog Caleb, a fourteen-year-old Labrador, had to be put down. It seems that time had caught up with the old fellow and his organs were failing. Sadly, the veterinarian could do nothing to stop the fatal decline and recommended immediate euthanasia. So it was done. And at the end of the day, a grief-stricken Rupert lay down his head to sleep.

In his sleep, Rupert was comforted by one of God’s angels, who exclaimed to the saddened soul that Caleb was well and very happy sitting at the side of the Lord. With despondency in his voice, Rupert professed that he would be sad without his companion and asked the angel why God had given dogs such a brief life.

The aura around the angel brightened as he softly answered Rupert, “My child, your own soul came to God’s Earth to learn of unconditional love, and how it can bring you the blessings of a good life. But dogs already love unconditionally. They have no lessons to learn, but only lessons to impart. And Caleb has done so with you now. You know that in your heart. So his need here is complete.”

Just as the angel began to fade from his dream, Rupert remarked, “I will miss him dearly. Without him, I’m not sure how I’ll live.”

“Rupert!” the angel quickly replied. “Have you learned nothing from him? You’ll live just as Caleb lived. You’ll give love deeply. You’ll expect and appreciate being loved by others. You’ll live brave, yet kind, and have a humble and simple existence. Yes, you’ll live as sweet Caleb did, Rupert. You’ll live life like a dog.”

What our souls can learn from our faithful companions:
~ Love unconditionally.
~ Be forever faithful and loyal.
~ Never pretend to be someone you’re not.
~ When your loved one comes home, run to greet them with joy.
~ Appreciate attention from others and let their touch thrill you.
~ If what you want is buried, don’t stop digging until you find it.
~ Find peace in the simple joy of a long walk.
~ Take every opportunity to go for a joyride.
~ Let the fresh air and wind in your face be pure bliss.
~ When you’re happy, dance and wag your entire body.
~ Run, romp, and play every day.
~ Delight in taking naps.
~ Stretch before rising.
~ On warm days, just lie back for a while in the grass.
~ On hot days, lie back for a while under a shady tree.
~ Never bite when a purposeful growl will suffice.
And most importantly,
~ When someone you love is having a bad day, sit close, be silent, and gently nuzzle them.

Why not do your best now to live life like a dog?

Another weakness is the lack of boldness in either candidates approach to convincing people their ideas should be favored- or grounded in something longer lasting than their preferred sound bite or the shilling of their current fortune building adventure.

I was listening to WABC tonight. Sliwa and Guiliani were discussing Noem. First, they said the books segment on the dog were totally tone deaf. But they went in to say they were in attendance at a NY event where she spoke in the last year or so. There conclusion then was she wasn’t ready for prime time despite some supporters looking for her advancement. I was a bit surprised they were being so frank about her.

Kristi Noem book: “I kill puppies”
In one day she shot dead a dog, a goat, 3 horses.
She likes to pull the trigger.
You gotta wonder if she hunts trespassers on her land.

to learn from McCains mistake.

Did someone feed you a bag of rocks? Palin is the only reason that many of us held our noses and voted for the self proclaimed “Maverick “.

NoLibZone: good comeback. You win the best post of the day.

And because of your announcement that you would prefer a bad dog live out a natural life without euthanasia, we expect to see the photos of your new rescue dog in the very near future. In fact, if it’s a bitch puppy, you can name the bad dog “Kristi” for spite.

You’ve got that right. At the time Palin was credited with bringing in 5 million votes that McCain would not have otherwise had. Mine was one of them.

In addition, McCain did not pick Palin his staff did. His choice was Joe Lieberman but he was talked out of it. Apparently he was very POed about it but acquiesced.

I have plenty of rescues right now. I’m not going to provide you with the pictures you requested because that request seems perverse and my instincts tell me not to feed the ill.

The dog was a 14 month old basically puppy. It took her a few shots to kill the goat so not only is she effed up she’s a chitty shot. The whole thing is stomach churning. Sorry but Kristi I don’t want to know you much less vote for you.

Farmers put down dogs all the time that kill livestock, especially goats and chickens. You can not “train” that out of them.
