Like millions of people in the US, artificial intelligence was just something Dianne Balon read about on the news.
Little did she know the tech would come to save her life.
Despite being a picture of health, an AI-powered blood test in 2022 revealed that one of the world's deadliest cancers was silently forming in Ms Balon's pancreas.
It caught the tumor in its earliest form, before it had the chance to grow and spread, which is when the vast majority of pancreatic cancers are caught - at which point it's too late.
The results of the test provided a key 'piece of the puzzle'. The now-62-year-old went on to have surgery to remove the lesion that would've developed into 'full-blown pancreatic cancer,' according to her surgeon.
'I am incredibly grateful,' she told DailyMail.com. 'AI absolutely saved my life, I won the lottery.'
She revealed that even her surgeon was caught off-guard before the operation, telling her: 'Why are you here? We don't usually get to see people this early in the process.'
Ms Balon's cancer journey began in 2017 at a health conference, which she was attending through her work as vice president at a Canadian health insurer.
The mother-of-two, from Edmonton, Canada, saw a presentation by Molecular You, a Vancouver biotech startup that had just launched a new blood test.
It works by analyzing more than 250 biomarkers which even the most sophisticated blood tests available in most hospitals cannot detect.
The results are then run through a database by an AI program trained to look for subtle changes to immune markers and inflammation, amongst other things.

“And perhaps some scary things too.” True that. I figure Biden and the alphabet agencies are using AI to record, catalog and disseminate every post I make on this website that doesn’t agree with his ideology.
Almost everything in this world has a duality.
A hammer that is used to build a beautiful coffee table can also be used to bash in the brains of a murder victim.
The problem is, people who can find an evil use of something are equally as inclined to use it for that purpose as someone who sees a benefit out of it might use it for a good purpose.
Both groups are trying to control the language...both are trying to tell people what language to use or not to use.
No one insisted or demanded that the term "AI" be used. It simply happened.
Complaining about its use is Orwellian/Marxian.
Software innovations or targeted algorithms.
As for AI, read this again.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test
a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human. Turing proposed that a human evaluator would judge natural language conversations between a human and a machine designed to generate human-like responses. The evaluator would be aware that one of the two partners in conversation was a machine, and all participants would be separated from one another.
This recent use of the term AI is just faddism and marketing hype.
That's a mouthful. I doubt it will catch on.
Just a wild guess, but I think most people will use a short catchy term like "AI" instead.
Then I assume you have no problem with trans people changing the meaning of “women,” and “men.”
Thank you for that clarification.
Trans people can use whatever language they want among themselves. It's still a free country (if just barely).
It's when trannies (and you) try to control the words that the rest of us that I have a problem.

I have no power to censor people.
I simply like to point out correct use, definition, context of language that I think is being abused or even fraudulent. This is more for the edification of readers who may not be aware of it’s miss-use. It is not an effort to censor or punish those who are being deceitful.
I understand. Sorry if I accused you of anything different.
I’m wishing you the best, and praying for your complete, uneventful recovery. What a thing to have to face. I’ve lost two friends to pancreatic cancer, and one to bowel cancer. Each was found in its last stages. Thankfully, yours is found earlier while a successful outcome is more likely.
Still, you face a heavy burden.
It’s still not AI.
Saying it isn't AI is not an attempt to control words. Actually just the opposite. Words mean something and when new age opportunists attempt to corrupt the meaning of words, correcting them is not a bad thing.
Orwellian/Marxian purveyors are the corrupters of traditional understanding. I don't attempt to control anyone.

There is no apostrophe in the possessive its :)

LOL! You’re right. I’ve always hated that one.
The apostrophied “it’s” is a contraction of “it is”. I know that. But so many possesives have an apostrophe-S, so it seems like “it” should get that too. >.<
