Nah, most of the ones I used to frequent up thar way were fairly modern and clean - don’t know what that other guy is thinking about but they are definitely an upscale convenience store/gas station.

Dittos. Never ever saw one run-down or dirty. Don't drive distances anymore, but I'll choose the one in my area that I do pass if I need gas or a rest room.
I suspect the "no fanfare" was planned because with half an hour's notice there would be a hostile demonstration by local working folks filling the entire store.
