The shooting of a bicyclist along a Lancaster County road in March in a road dispute was justified, the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office announced on Friday.
The shooting was reported about 4:20 p.m. on March 13, on Fruitville Pike near the intersection with Delp Road in Manheim Township, the DA’s office said.
On that day, Robin Megill, 33, of Lancaster, was riding a bike on Fruitville Pike in the lane of travel with multiple vehicles backed up.
The driver directly behind Megill beeped their horn, police said, prompting Megill to stop in the middle of the roadway with no traffic in front of him. His actions halted the line of traffic behind him on Fruitville Pike.
“Eventually Megill moved to the right side of the roadway,” police said. “Multiple vehicles passed him and then stopped at a red light at Delp Road. Megill chased the lead vehicle, visibly pedaling uphill to catch a vehicle that beeped at him. Megill forcefully flung the front passenger door of the vehicle open and moved toward the interior of the vehicle immediately prior to being struck by a single bullet”
Megill was hit in the torso from the handgun, the DA’s office said. The driver then pulled over and called 911, according to the press release.
The DA’s office concluded the driver was justified in their use of deadly force specifically because Megill was “illegally and forcefully entering an occupied vehicle.” The driver was legally carrying the handgun and will not face any charges, the DA’s office said.
Megill, who is expected to make a full recovery, was charged with a summary violation of disorderly conduct in connection with the incident. His preliminary hearing had not been scheduled as of Friday.
Where did he put the bike when he was climbing in?
Please NEVER move to Pennsylvania. People like you are why so many people spend life in prison for just trying to defend themselves against violent savages.
A rational person who has been in violent confrontations like this is the only one who understands that when someone assaults you - you cannot wait for them to cause permanent injury or kill you to act — it is a split second decision.
When they attempt to open your car door, attempt to break your car window, or rush or swing at you, you can shoot them. If a group of them surrounds you, start pushing you, or knock you down, for example in a river where you may drown, it doesn’t matter how weird you acted, you now have a right to defend yourself UNTIL THE THREAT IS NEUTRALIZED. That means killing all of them.
Likewise, if they are armed, and begin to witdraw, you don’t know if they are taking up covered positions to begin shooting again, so you can keep shooting until they are no longer a threat.
Have you ever been violently assaulted, especially by a group of people who pulled out weapons after the assault began to swing out of their favor? If not, you should never even be allowed on a self-defense jury in my opinion.
Things happen fast, and the guy you just knocked out oold, is now up and has pulled out a knife and is coming at you from behind.
I have lived in some horrible neighborhoods when getting my education and had to deal with all the situations described here. I am lucky to be alive, and even luckier to not be in prison, as I no doubt would with jurors like those today who live pampered life and never encounter violent people who want to end their lives.
Thanks for signing up to be thread-idiot.
“Are you serious? Maybe the cyclist lost his head in this dispute, but how in the world are you justified to shoot him??”
I’m guessing you are an entitled cyclist. “The DA’s office concluded the driver was justified in their use of deadly force specifically because Megill was “illegally and forcefully entering an occupied vehicle.” NOT GUILTY.
If you're yelling at me and force my truck door open and grab for me, I'll kill you. I'll kill the sh*t out of you. So many of the spandex clad roadie bikers I've met are complete a-holes. It's why I no longer associate with them or their clubs. Plus, joiners are fags.
“That said, who drives around anywhere anymore with their doors unlocked? And did the car’s doors lock automatically after the vehicle was started?”
I had the same question. Maybe a very old vehicle.
Who does he think he is, a J6 prosecutor?
RTFA!!
FTA: “

Some places have these things called “laws”
The bicyclist is lucky to survive.
Beetle helmets do not improve IQ.
Because he opened the car door and was entering the vehicle. As a cyclist, I’ve gotten into a couple confrontations. One was an idiot lady in a pickup who deliberately tried to run me off the road. (I was on the 10’wide shoulder near the right. She veered into my lane and missed me by just a couple inches.)
I caught her at the net red light. I suppose the dent came out of her hood after I pounded it. I’d never ever consider entering someone’s car.
While the cyclist had the legal right to the lane, Etiquette calls for him to pull over and let cars by as he can.
For one, they were a cyclist. There should be no bag limit
A Critical Ass like him shouldn’t get angry. It could lead to something like this.
You attack me in my car, you might get shot, especially if you open the door.
Not any different if you come up to my house and open the door.
You have to be nuts to think this appropriate in any circumstance.
I used to. I enabled the automatic locks after I got my carry permit. I wanted to prevent the very scenario described above.
The cyclist opened the door of the vehicle and was entering. The driver, in self defense, fired a shot and hit said cyclist. Obviously justified. Where would that NOT be justified is my question.
Physician, heal thyself!
Seriously, someone yanks the passenger door open on my vehicle and attempts to enter, I'm not going to ask them if they intend harm, I'm going to protect myself before I'm harmed. You don't need absolute affirmation of a weapon or intent to act defensively. You merely need a reasonable belief that harm may happen.
YOU open my vehicle door & enter the space & rage at me???
You will be repelled as best I can do-—with whatever I can use.
TIME how long it would take for someone to open your door & enter your vehicle.
HOW does any person know if a deadly weapon is involved or not?
YOU invade MY space in that manner-you deserve ANY action I take to defend myself.
GOOD LUCK with YOUR “Self Defense” tactics in the future.
IF you think you have time to get such a person to answer your questionaire about what their intent is-—PLEASE make sure YOUR funeral arrangements are PRE paid.
I would bet this ‘door open & intrusion’ took no more than 6-7 seconds.....IF that.
