Russia and NATO are now in "direct confrontation", the Kremlin said as the U.S.-led alliance marked its 75th anniversary on Thursday.
NATO's successive waves of eastern enlargement are a fixation of President Vladimir Putin, who went to war in Ukraine two years ago with the stated aim of preventing the alliance from coming closer to Russia's borders. Instead, the war has galvanised NATO, which has expanded again with the entry of Finland and Sweden.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "In fact, relations have now slipped to the level of direct confrontation."
NATO was "already involved in the conflict surrounding Ukraine (and) continues to move towards our borders and expand its military infrastructure towards our borders", he said.

Oh, go suck your thumb someplace else.
Remember the Tsars also had Alaska and a good portion of the east cost of North America claimed at one time.
Well maybe he will make Washington DC glow then...Place needs cleaned out..
Hitler wasn't able to keep up producing the supply of synthetic oil he needed to run his military. He invaded Russia to take control of Russia's natural resources. Lebenstraum in Russia was the least on his mind at that time in the war. He had all the other countries he'd invaded for that plan. And he never would have conquered all of Russia to gain access to the whole country anyway. He chose poorly to begin with, and then he split his army, which was his downfall.
Americans have no interests in the Ukraine and we cannot save them without significant cost so yes I would leave them to their fate which would likely have been better had we not decided to enter this proxy war.
The only excuse you have for kicking this hornets nest is “moral superiority” and eventually the bill will come due. My hope is that me and mine don’t get killed so you can feel righteous.
Hitler should have employed a “Divide and Conquer” strategy. Promise the Ukrainians autonomy and to be “under German protection” in exchange for helping the Nazis fight the Soviets.
The French are comparing the Kremlin government people to “panicking chickens without heads”, running around randomly bumping into doors and walls... lol.
Putin is not considered as intellectually fit anymore by French citizens.
His many and endless nuclear threats make him look surreal and comical. He has bluffed so many times now that he has discredited himself, no one believes him anymore.
Putin ravages the Russian economy in the long run while being a paper tiger. Russia is 30 times bigger than Ukraine, is throwing artillery 10 to 1 on Ukraine, while suffering 5 times mores casualties than the Ukrainians... All this for two years.... and Russia is gaining nothing, just a few yards here and there... it’s going nowhere....
This alone makes Russia look weak. The Russian weakness is exasperated to such a level that it makes some in US Congress believe Ukraine doesn’t need Western ammunition anymore! But THAT is a miscalculation!
Because Russia is still capable of hitting civilian housing and infrastructure in Ukraine. Just like any cheap islamic terrorist groups do.
Defending civilians against terrorism requires ammunition.
Would be nice to Make FreeRepublic FreeRepublic Again
MFrFrA !!!
The FR warmongers seemingly are going to get WWIII. Your outstanding CNC will stride the battlefield with his military prowess and invoke fear into the Russians and your woke military will make you proud!
You arrogant maniacs think you can control this war and prevent it from going nuclear, bloody fools. All over the craphole the Ukraine which means nothing strategically to the US.
Hitler wasn't that bright, and he would never listen to his Generals, even if one had recommended that. Paul von Hindenburg called Hitler "The Austrian Corporal."
How did those missiles in Turkey work out for NATO? Yup, almost caused WWIII during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Russia is not some third world nation for USA and its proxies(NATO) to plunder for its resources.
They’re running America into the ground, right here, right now...Not much time to be concerned with corrupt countries like Ukraine..
Ukraine is totally corrupt - no one knows where the money from USA goes. Ukraians are fleeing the country and 350k to 400k of their countrymen dead or seriously wounded, it is just a matter of time before what’s left collapses. Neither Zalynski or the Biden administration care about the Ukranian people and that’s why there are only 19 million people left.
Stability in Europe is in the US interest and the money we sending to Ukraine is pocket change. We should have given the Ukrainians the resources they needed from the start.
You’ve got that right.
NATO is about much more than the USSR. It’s about more than Russia, for that matter. In the longer run, NATO’s greater purpose is to keep Europe from swerving into the path of the early 1900’s, but this time with nukes. For that, the US needs to be the single biggest player. Russia may or may not be part of the trouble, in a generation or so, but the odds and history are favorable that it will be somehow involved.
You are forgetting that most of the Ukrainian people did not wish to be ruled by a Russian sock puppet. Nuland etc. were minor factors at most.
Of note, one of my friends argues that individuals, political parties, etc., are irrelevant in altering the currents of history. I don’t quite agree. Truly exceptional individuals can IMO alter the greater movements of history. OTOH truly incompetent leaders are usually just a product of their culture or society. In any case, Nuland is about the most unexceptional person one could imagine. A 3rd rate bureaucratic hack.
That’s the problem — Biden et al engaged instead in a pathetic form of risk management that drip-drip slow walked mostly popgun weapons to Ukraine...
Mostly we send old weapons that the Russian tools and trolls claim have been destroyed 3 times over. Pretty obviously, few are leaving Ukraine.
IMO we should send the full amount Biden wants, in weapons, mostly old weapons, and maybe a few billion in humanitarian materials and goods. The Euros can handle the financial support.
US defense expenditures now nearly match our all time low post 1940. (~2.7% in 1998-1999. It was ~2.1% in 1940 — we know where THAT got us, 41+ % by 1945.) So, the actual appropriations less transport to Ukraine, training, and those humanitarian goods, should go into new weapons and weapons plants. In fact, that’s actually where the bulk of the “Ukraine money” ends up now.
I’m sure this post will bring out an anti-MIC reply or two. Those persons are just nuts or ignorant.
